would say, if you don't faff with it by putting induction kits on it and you change the oil twice a year or 5k whatever comes first, and you don't take it above 3,500 RPM until its over 70C on the temp gauge and you avoid short journeys particularly in winter, you can expect about 150,000 miles from it easy. Cars prefer to be driven than temperature cycling. However, its obvious that the feeble 1 litre model will outlast the other engines by a good margin from a wear point of view, but most engines fail because of internal corrosion these days - and that's what you get if you do short journeys and don't change the oil enough (forget what the service shedule says, they want you to buy a new VW every 5 years).
Thats exactly what I do. However I do often drive the car fast, not ragging per se, but once shes warm I often take the revs up to 6k. thats mainly cause the GTi seems to be sh'tty at lower revs, to be honest my previous astra (1.6 8v) feels like it has more torque from the 2k-3k mark, so did the polo 1.4 8v (2000 reg). I have to take the revs over 4k before I feel a kick (I guess thats VVT).

The Astra will have more torque at a lower RPM, simply because its 8V.

16V is supposed to breath better and have less reciprocating mass forces, so you can rev higher. And since the engine displacement is the same, the more times you can have explosions in your cylinders per second, the more power you can get.

If you could rev to 20,000 RPM like a formula one car, then you'd have a stupid amound of power, but virtually no torque at all at low rpm!
