but it seems you've just had bad luck!
i know loads of people on here and from round my way that haven't had a gearbox/clutch problem yet and some have as high as 77,000 miles on the clock

if all modern VW's are "mediocre", why did you buy one in the first place?

i know you said you didnt do "in depth" research untill after it broke, but surely you must have known about "Modern VW's" before you bought it?

to be honest, for the price, i dont think u can beat the build quality and reliability of VW's.

Sorry guys but I've got to agree with this, I've owned several older VW's my last been a 96 MK3 Golf GTI and it was far better built than my current 02 9n polo. I'm not a Ford man, but Ford have certainly improved over the years and are probably more reliable than a VW. Some people are a little short sighted, theres a lot better car's out there than a veedub nowerdays.

VW has character
nuff said really

plus alot of other makes are prone to rust/lacquer peel even on post 00' models!

Do they? Which one's that then :? Most VW's look dull and boring unless there in GTI/Sport guise, if you want character buy a MINI or a pre 1994 VW

VW's used to be built in Germany, with German components and German labour, but modern day VW's are now built in Spain, this means that Spanish labour and Spanish components are used in the manufacturing process, this is why modern VW's have lost the reliability and build quality which they were once renowned for.
Because everybody knows that the Germans are some of the best engineer's on the planet, but when you outsource the production of your product to another country with a less skilled workforce, and inferior components the build quality of the product will suffer.

Just out of interest here, what exactly are you trying to prove here?

Is it that the Polo GTi has had gearbox problems? If it is, then you're preaching to the converted as enough people on here recognise that some have had issues with this.

Alternatively, is it an attempt to show that modern VW's aren't as well built as their forerunners? As once again, thats probably true. But I think if you look across the board of German car manufacturers in many cases this is true. Competition is a lot stronger, market forces want a bigger new car with more equipment, more safety features, better environment impact. The company needs profit. Something has to give, and sadly it seems to have been quality control in many cases (see Mercedes A, C, ML-Class). Can't have everything for nothing.

How about that Ford is better than VW? I'm not even going to mention that, as it's quite frankly a subjective nightmare.

Or, is it to justify to yourself the fact you sold your GTi, as it turned round and bit you in the ass one day?

VW's are still built in germany, there HQ is still in wolfsburg they just have factories around the world like every other car manufacturer. Spanish components are not used, german products are used as it's a german manufacturer :roll: I'd like to know where you heard different?

My friend is a VW Sales Executive who works in central London, and that is where I got my information from, VW's are not built in Germany anymore.
