pah, you useless lot.

in the end I managed to source some connectors, cut the pipe after removing the intake pipe for access, and put in some new pipe (think it was fuel line but it had the same internal diameter).

and also reroute it!

if anyone has a TDI you might want to check the routing of this vacuum pipe - by default it's way too close to the hot EGR pipe.

problem solved.
