Yeah!

I got an LUK clutch and I'm using a genuine sleeve and clutch release bearing as I don't trust the quality of the LUK one

update for any future readers of this thread.

cylinder 4 misfire was cured today. i had already replaced plugs and leads but it ended up being the ignition coil itself. an easy swap out - took 5 minutes. just remember which lead goes where! the old one was completely burnt out and im surprised the car ran so well considering the condition of the ignition coil it was awful.

clutch unfortunately looks like new one as previously suggested (rather than cable) so currently putting some money away for that.

lambda sensor was inspected and cabling found to be in perfect condition after the multiplug, so that leaves me with the sensor itself - another £100

finally to refurb the wheels, replace the gti badges and give her a good polish. anyone else find the road noise inside the car quite loud from the tyres when driving these cars?

The road noise could just be your tyres. I've just put my BBS wheels back on and it's become noisy to the extent that I thought a wheel bearing had gone. A quick swap back to my winter wheels confirmed it was just the tyre brand.

cheers stan. in fact i owe you a double thanks. i did the led sidelight switch out today and while i was in the middle of it thought i would check this darn lambda multiplug again. low and behold one green cable has been split completely in two, immediately after the multiplug where it bends upwards. soldering all the way down there seems like a right PITA! just doesnt tickle my fancy at all - any tips?

For a start I bit the bullet and traced the harness back into its shroud and cut all six wires so I could do the repair on the bench. Mine was the same, right at the back of the plug. As you've probably guessed there was no way of stripping the wire back that close to the plug so I put the soldering iron on it until the sheath just melted away to reveal the little bit of wire. I managed to drop a blob of solder in and get a repair piece of wire to take to it. I had to do this 4 times! Then it was just a case of soldering it all back into the car.

I haven't put the plug back onto that bracket on the gearbox because the bend radius it creates causes this problem in the first place. IIRC I've try wrapped it to the lower part of the same bracket to give it a shallower bend in the wiring.

Six VW repair wires is the best way to fix it. The gold plated ones

I did it this way and never had any problems after.

It's two 2mm and 4 0.5mm wires from memory

They are double ended and 30cm long so cut in half there's plenty of wire to work with

They should heat shrink crimped onto the existing wires

If its only one, just replace the one needed.

thank you gents. I did a bit of searching on here last night and found the old thread. hate going to my stealers (Jacksons Guernsey) because over here they truly are stealers. my old audi a3 fsi went in with an ecu fault and i ended up having to fork out for a new ecu and £650 for new clocks because the new ecu wouldnt code to the old clocks! how is that my fault?! never been back there since. final price came in at £1100 which i had to pay upfront before the work was carried out. it seems that unless you walk in there suited and booted with a wallet full of cash ready to buy a new car then they just look at you as pig s**t!

on another note, the 4 pin square coolant sensor i ordered is the wrong one. apparently there are different variations? there is a green coloured one installed at the moment. but im being asked if mine has a yellow dot? any idea which ones the correct one for my car?(a 2000 ARC)

Replace with a green one

Yellow is wrong.

Hi guys,

I had fault code 17524 and just took a look under my car and found this...
Image

Looks like someone has attempted the repair before,

My car failed its MOT on emissions it was way off what your allowed, would the damaged wiring have been the cause? they ended up saying i needed a new CAT which cost a fair bit so im just inquisitive as to if i actually needed the new CAT?

Glad you seem to be getting to the bottom of all your problems

Cheers for any help

Yup that's pretty much identical to mine. the damaged wiring will cause your pre cat lambda not to work correctly. most noticeably in my car the fuel consumption is horrendous. this fault will no doubt have an affect on emissions testing. depending on how long your sensor has been in this state could well mean that your CAT has had it. BUT dont replace it just yet. For the sake of a few quid get the repair wires alex has mentioned above and give it ago. or get a local auto electrician to do it for you. once its been fixed it can take some time before the ecu realises its working again. so drive it for a few days then scan and clear the fault codes and hopefully it shouldn't return. my guess is that as soon as this has been repaired it will pass the emissions test. (no guarantees though! :) )

As above, my mpg was crap when my pre cat lambda sensor wiring was broke.

Mine failed its MOT on emissions about 4 years ago. It was my post cat sensor at fault, once I'd changed that it passed fine. The only problem can be if its been over fuelling for a while as this can kill the cat. It's the same reason you shouldn't bump start a car with a cat, the unburnt fuel does the damage.

My MOT was back in September, had to get it sorted all in one weekend as I forgot my MOT was due so had no time to do look into it myself,

First noticed that code back in May though  probably should of looked into it then, it never seamed to effect my car though and I have been getting 40+mpg which I thought was pretty reasonable.

I'll look into those repair wires, i have mangaed to connect it back up for the time being and driven over 100 miles and the code has gone now, if that was all that was stopping it passing emissions i'll be gutted they replaced the cat and a sensor! £££ The cat might have been damaged though as mentioned,

thanks for all your help :)
