Managed mine in the end, only difficulty I had was getting the drivers side bulb out, I was very tight in the holder! Can't say I can see a lot of difference between OEM and 5000k though, not enough to warrant changing the bulbs, I'm tempted to go for some of the Phillips LED conversion ones.

When I've needed a bit more light I've always used PIAA bulbs, the best I've ever tried...

The LED headlights look to be nearer 6000K which is quite hard for a halogen to achieve.
The closer you can get to this value, the better.

However, since these are also fog lights, having them slightly warmer in colour will keep them effective in foggy situations.
White light and fog is not a good combo!

If you want really white, you might need to go higher wattage than standard.
For example, I have bulbs at home that are both rated as 5000K but one set is 55/60W and the others are 80W
The 80W ones are definitely whiter.

The trouble is, 80w you have a good chance of frying your wiring. This has been explained to you by another member.

I echo that. The loom isn’t rated for 80W bulbs and you risk overloading it compared to using 55w bulbs

I’ve fitted these at the moment which are definitely better than the stock bulbs but I’ve also bought a set of Philips Diamond Vision which I might fit later after a recommendation from Andy Beats. Scott

Right then, bulbs now fitted. I could tell a difference when looking into the light compared with the side I hadn’t changed at that point. Photos will follow tonight to compare with last night on the standard bulbs.

Notice the mistake in the manual. Number 2 is in fact the dipped beam not the main beam! In the below photo, the bulb on the left is the dipped beam.

The photos don’t do the lights justice. In person there is a vast difference in brightness and it is a crisp white light.

First test will be tomorrow night when my shift finishes at midnight. The way home is an unlit dual carriageway then the M1.

Going to have to figure if there's adjustment of the main beams only, I would assume there is.
My dip height/spread is now acceptable, but main beam is still ridiculously low.
Never had this much hassle with headlights before in decades.
Funnily enough since a Golf, it must be a VW thing to set their lights far lower than others.

No proof yet that the wiring would fry, only guesswork/assumption.

Coincidence you got a new headlight housing under warranty after using them? Putting info out there likely to bugger someone's car, without telling them the potential consequences is not helpful.

Extra watts on the same volts = more current. More current = more resistance = more heat through the same cross section of wiring. You're likely to cook your wiring and warp your headlight housings using overpowered bulbs which put out more heat than is intended. That's an assumption based on physics and electrical circuit knowledge.

You wouldn't run your 40A cooker on a 13A circuit in the kitchen.

The only unknown here is whether VW over engineers its housings for heat resistance and uses a larger gauge wire than should be necessary to carry 5A for a 55W bulb (probably not).

My new headlight was for condensation/misting, therefore nothing to do with the short-term fitting of 80W bulbs.
