So VW UK say the factory is closed but I got an email from VW in South Africa saying it is open until August. I cannot find a way to get that email to show on this forum. It is obviously chaos at VW

I'd emailed VWUK's CEO and I had a phone conversation with a really nice lady from the Cell's exec. Dept.

She has told me that the Uitenhage plant is closed for model year / new production processes / WLTP changes until the 6th August.

Conflicting info, because VWSA also told me that the plant was at full production.. ..

Does anyone have a confirmed build week beyond this Week 23 W/C June 4, 2018? :?:

    Edit:

WLTP will apply to all new car registrations from September 2018.
WLTP is only being adopted in full by the European Union, Great Britain, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Turkey and Israel.

    [Speculation]
A potential theory is that the factory is still in full production for cars outside the above markets, but until they have a WLTM compliant Polo, they are not confirming any further build weeks for the UK and other WLTP adopting markets?
    [\Speculation]

My dealer's fleet saleswoman that I was dealing with has attempted to contact me today about delivery and WLTP. I missed her call and when I tried to call back she was unavailable, then when she rang me back I was driving home from work, so didn't pick up.

I assume that she's going to tell me that my car will be registered on an 18 plate regardless of when I collect it due to WLTP regs coming in. This seems to be getting handled very badly by all involved. I assume new plate day, and even the month will be a washout because those cars built early enough to arrive at the dealership up to Aug 31st that aren't yet WLTP tested will end up being taken early in June/July/Aug, and those built late enough to have to be WLTP tested and compliant are going to be arriving in Oct/Nov/Dec due to these car manufacturers sorting out WLTP compliance during traditional Summer Shutdowns and only cars made after mid August will be registered on a 68 plate whenever they arrive.

What a ridiculous situation, to enforce the compliance date on the date of a new plate for registrations rather than mid-plate. There appears to be leeway in the legislation to allow stock cars to be registered and sold as new on whatever prevailing plate there is at the time of chosen registration for between 1st Sept 2018 and 31 Aug 2019, presumably there's none for cars ordered with a sale agreed on them.

I stipulated that I wanted a new 68 plate car, to be delivered on or after 1st Sept 2018 , and the saleswoman was in agreement that it could and would happen - did the dealerships all suddenly just learn about WLTP implications in the last fortnight? If I can only get mine on an 18 plate then I might as well take it as soon as it is available to save it from being pawed at in the showroom. It's getting built this week, so I imagine it will be available mid July.

I'd better get my skates on for tidying up and selling the Audi A1 I have to offload - I thought that I had at least a month to get it spotless and advertised in Autotrader.

I believe BW24 is still a viable build week. from week to week my car's expected build week has flitted between BW23 and BW24, and had confirmation that my car is now being built this week.

What are the implications of owning a non compliant car later in its life? Will they be worth less than the compliant later models. Would it be better to cancel the order and wait for a later car despite the delay?

I think the non-tested (not necessarily non-compliant, but hard to believe that VW hasn't tested them already and found them either non-compliant or borderline) will be worth more (age considered and accounted for) and sought after if the PPF they'll almost certainly get proves to be a PITA later on in life.

How is that extra tech going to be paid for? Showroom tax is only £205, so no scope to keep RRP same price but get a significantly lower showroom tax rating and pocket the difference to pay for it. Prices will undoubtedly go up or standard equipment pared back to pay for it. DPFs mean poor performance and low mpg as they clog and then regen if you're not doing long journeys. I imagine the same will be true of a PPF.

Crazy to think VW pressed ahead to make likely WLTP non-compliant GTI for a matter of only 10-12 weeks before a need to stop and plan to do what is required for compliance, unless making those changes will prove costly per car, so they make as many as they can before their arm is twisted.

If post-shutdown GTIs gain a 7 speed wet-DSG box for economy gains then that might change desirability.

Thanks for that impressive analysis of the situation. I know that the DPFs on diesels I have owned can be a pain and expensive, including the diesel Jag which is my pride and joy. I will do some homework on WTLP to try and get my head around what it means.

    Anotther thought.
Will the vehicle tax be any different between pre and post WTLM versions?

Doubtful for the annual charge, possibly for the showroom tax. HMRC/DVLA wants everyone to pay tax on their car - too many people getting away with £0 tax disc on sub 100g/km CO2 cars with the previous tax banding system. Can't see WLTP leading to cheaper car tax.

    From the http://www.dft.gov.uk/vca/fcb/wltp.asp

"....How will the implementation of WLTP affect car tax?

The CO2 emissions figure is used to determine the cost of Vehicle Excise Duty (‘car tax’) for new cars during their first year of registration. For those cars approved under WLTP, a figure equivalent to what would have been achieved had the car been tested under NEDC will be used and displayed on the database. At some point, it is expected that the CO2 value obtained under WLTP will be used instead of the NEDC equivalent, although exactly when that will be is not known. When WLTP does start to be used to calculate vehicle tax, it will only affect cars that at that time are unregistered, i.e. the CO2 figure that is used for tax purposes when the car is first registered will not change during its lifetime.

As mentioned previously, where NEDC equivalent figures are used in this way, VCA will provide a link to a separate area of the site displaying the WLTP test results for that car.

For more information on current car tax rates, please visit https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables......"
