The car went in for a new engine today, this is the third attempt to repair the car now. I spoke to the technician as I was under the impression the CTHE engine would be getting fitted, but he told me its just a modified CAVE engine thats being fitted, my brother had the same done to his and his still had oil issues, anyone else had the engine replaced and still experiencing issues?
Cheers
Ben

I had a new engine fitted just over a year ago (60 plate). Your right, it is a modified CAVE engine, and the new engine will be linked back to your original engine number anyway so there will be nothing to change on the V5.
All has been fine, have done just over 4,200 miles, but over the weekend just gone, I noticed a puff of oil smoke out of the exhaust. First time I have seen that since the engine was replaced. It may have been down to a lot of short journeys, stop/start etc as I appear to have used very little on the dipstick.
Generally the replacement engines have fixed the problem, but I have heard of the odd case where a 2nd replacement engine has been installed. They do still use oil though, I went through about 0.75/litre in 4,000 miles which I think is ok for a new engine.

Cheers for that, the only issue I'm worried about is the warranty, I don't want to be left out of warranty and it be needing another engine a year down the line, may see if I can get an extension on the warranty but I'm not holding up much hope on that.

Okay so my car has gone in for a new engine and I'm just wondering whats the best way of running it in, I know VW will tell me to take it steady, but some people have told me to drive it like I stole it to ensure that the rings seal properly to avoid the oil issues from happening again. Anybody know which is right?\
Cheers

I'd read the owners manual and see what that says. My current Astra had the manual followed to the book and at 207,000 miles it still uses no oil....others I know with the same car have issues with oil usage, I often wonder if their engine was perhaps not driven from new as advised. Strangely, the salesman at the time told me to drive it however I wanted...
Piston rings and bores won't bed in well with anything but mineral oil, so with the factory 5w/30 (I think) fully synthetic in the Polo GTi engine, I'm not sure that will do much or not.
What exact part of the engines were causing the oil loss? I never did find this out.

I believe its the piston rings which cause the oil loss in this engine. So your saying that it should have different oil in then?
Cheers

For bedding in a new engine/piston rings/bores, yes, mineral oil is best, but this was from an engine we rebuilt ourselves not a factory one, so they may well do some bedding in during the build process.

I don't buy this 'drive it like I stole it' idea. I had a new engine fitted, but I did try and vary the engine revs for the first 1000 miles, probably not exceeding 3,500 rpm.
Certainly take extra care of it in the first 1,000 miles and ensure the oil is up to temperature.

Okay so today I decided to speak to the sales manager to see what my options were in regards to keeping the car, after a lot of debating and once he had spoken to a technician about my GTI they offered to buy it back at the price I payed for it, and we then worked out a deal on this beauty:
Before I placed a deposit down I had them check that it had the newer CTHE engine (I was pretty confident as its a 63 plate but wanted to make sure). This one also has pretty much a full warranty so I won't have to worry about it running out anytime soon!
Overall I'm very pleased as I didn't loose any money on returning the car, and also got a GTI with the wheels and the colour that I originally wanted! I'll post some more pictures once I receive her on Friday.

Nice. Wish I'd gone for blue.
Just a quick query. Is this pre-registered or dealer stock? Seems a bit early for a 63 plater to be available.

Yeah I love the colour, looks even better in person.
Not entirely sure, the car only has 7000 miles on it so I'm guessing its used, it also doesn't have the Yorkshire plate number on it so its not from round here.

Just asking as it's less than 6 months old. 7000 miles is a bit more than I'd expect on a pre-reg and someones stolen your back doors
Looks lovely in blue. When I bought mine a year ago there were about 3 available second hand and not a lot cheaper than new so I did buy new. Now there's quite a few black 5drs like mine available 2nd hand

Yep just thought it was a bit quick for one to be available 2nd hand as it's still the current reg.
