Cheers mate. I've got a couple more options to scout out first, but if I'm stuck I'll be sure to let you know. Thanks for the help

roof and pillars are black suede fabric, and the seals and tweeter covers are regular satin black. i tried dye but it didn't come out dark enough and too ages to dry

Looks good
have you thought about flocking the dash to match the headlining? Could look good?

Fair play and good choice, I know you've had your eye on them for some time and I don't reckon it will dissapoint. I remember cruising in my gti when a mk1 came past me (I was slammed my lowest on the rm's at the time), he gave me the thumbs up and flew past, looked sooo good and even though I must have been over 100mm+ down the car looked tiny and wiiiideee
can't beat a tidy mk1! You will miss the comforts though! Can't you do both? A big part of me still wants my gti sat on the driveway, they are so pretty looking !

I'd love to have both, believe me! I need money from this car to fund the engine conversion though.
Yeh comforts may be an issue. I'd make it my first few tasks though to fit remote central locking, electric windows etc..
There's a nice Golf 1.8T on edition now, respray in black 5.5k. Really nice but the it's a DIY project and quite far along the modifying line for my liking.

Quite a few already converted ones pop up on ed38 & ph which would save you a hell of alot in the long run, it would be very brave to take on the conversion yourself even if it is fairly standard and just your chequebook doing the work! Fair play though if you do..I certainly don't want to put you off considering it would be far more of an achievement and more your car but I can't help but think how much cheaper it would be to buy a post-conversion s**t and fix it up, then you could use that extra bunse for a disco potato or respray!
Either way mate good luck and keep a progress thread on here somewhere so I can keep an eye

Re: Tim's GTI. update thread, INTERIOR SPRAYING DONE PG40
Yeh that's the thing, I don't know enough to take on the conversion myself (even with extensive help from mates) so it would have to be a drive in drive out job or a post conversion buy. Something I haven't always been fond of but have learnt to come to terms with, as there's still soo much I can do myself that won't make it feel like another cheque book car (a pet hate of mine).
Both has it's advantages and disadvantages.
If it's latter I could potentially buy a hidden disaster and only a select few people would be able to help, most of them charging above and beyond to look at it.
If I bought a car and paid for the conversion, I'd at least have the piece of mind that if anything went wrong, there was somebody at hand to help that I had relations with, and that knew the conversion through and through.
Also like you said a pre-converted car is cheaper, and there's no conversion down time.
I'm in no rush though, (as long as my Polo doesn't lose too much value!) So i'll just keep my eyes out for what's on offer.

Re: Tim's GTI. update thread, INTERIOR SPRAYING DONE PG40
It's not that I've lost any spark with the Polo, I'd happily take it to the next level. I'm just looking at it from a financial point of view, I know what my next car is going to be, and it's well within my realms to buy, insure etc.. So it would be unwise to spend more money on this project.
That Golf is nice, colour scheme is a bit too retro for me though. The arches are sweet!

I feel what you mean about the engine conversion Tim, last thing you want is grief when the car you've bought "claiming" to be fully running breaks down halfway home, you're right in that you have the peice of mind that you've got someone to turn to should it mess up. How much are conversions these days though? I'm sure you could do it yourself with some mates, i'd happily help ha - not that i'd be any help really! Would you be better buying a restored model or you fancy having a go and bringing on from the brink?

Re: Tim's GTI. update thread, INTERIOR SPRAYING DONE PG40
exactly darren.
perfect plan is to buy a mark 1 on the cheap (under a grand) without any life threatening damage to the chassis, get the conversion done as soon as i buy it. enjoy the car for a year or so as it is (new engine, standard paint) then get a respray when i've saved up some more.
i'd happily buy a post converted car as long as it's sound and not too far along the line that i can call it my own.
conversions range between 4-5.5k.

Cool beans, I don't suppose it matters really but you going to try and look for a GTi model? There is a nice red example that needs small work to get it working over on edition, only £950 and wouldn't take much to mess around with to fix + its a GTi. Have some fun while you save up on conversion, then get it done? You'll save a fortune getting one premade, but it'll never have that "why yes, I did have the conversion". If you get what I mean
