In Italy, in the most important montlhy car magazine (Quattroruote) appeared a two pages article about TSI oil problems...

VW was ridiculed already at the beginning of the article, more or less they said: "Once upon a time the use was to have a jar of oil in the car trunk, no more in 2012, except for Vw..."

VW stated that a modification to oil separation will be done and no more engines will be replaced.
Also they said that absolutely no money are due to oil refill, they will be done for free in all VW workshops...
Also, they said that new piston rings are already installed from engine # CAV261914, but that was not the definitive solution and they are still working on it...

I really like this comment because the Castrol rubbish they specify burns off easier than the 2 oils I have tried (Liqui Moly TopTech 4200 and Shell Helix Ultra) and it seems to become dirty and burned quicker and easier too, it really starts to stink after a while yet both the shell and liqui-moly still retained an aroma of when they were new and didn't dirty-up as quickly. So yeah, free top-up with rubbish oil that will keep burning off, awesome work VW!

They also say that the replacment of piston rings on engines from CAV261914 is absolutely unuseful, because it already mounts new rings: it's better to wait for a modified oil separator, that is going to come soon...

Interesting comments there guys. I have been in touch with my original dealer again (who replaced the piston rings) stating that I am unhappy still with it. I have tried to turn a blind eye to it and just accept these cars use oil, but it is trailing a smoke screen behind it when I put my foot down. No wonder people back off by a long way!

This cannot and is NOT acceptable or normal!

Which is you engine number? Is it succesive to CAV261914 (you can see it in the service book, second page)...
If it is successive the piston rings replacement was absolutely unuseful, following what VW declared to the Italian magazine... Furthermore to perfectly re-assemble the head of the 1.4 TSI it's really difficoult and delicate, due to open deck basement: the head has an important function about th retain of the cylinders...

Yes - mine is an early one, and CAV number is 241.... I had the piston rings changed as a separate job as oil burning was even worse than it is now.

You need a new whole engine, in our forum we have plenty of cases like yours: changed piston rings and worse than before, then new engine was installed...

That's what I have suspected, but VW have told me persistently that there is nothing wrong. I will turn the heat on them now, my warranty is halfway through and I want it sorted.

Many thanks for your useful information.

My GTI went in last week for new piston rings to be fitted because of excessive oil consumption.
After a week, I got a call from the dealer saying that this work now won't be done.
The dealer said it was advised by VW to postpone repairs as an optimised crankcase ventilation is in preparation.
No time-scale was given but fingers crossed it is soon as the current drought order in the SE is making it more difficult to wash all the soot off the boot lid :(

Interesting, I have contacted the manager of my dealer earlier this week but still awaiting a reply, he may be away but I suspect reason for no response is that they are not sure what to tell me, or I will go away!

Thing is, last year the revised lower block was supposed to fix the problem so should we be anymore confident this time round?

Many thanks for sharing this news with us, I just hope a fix is imminent as I (like everyone else) am fed up trailing blue smoke and having to constantly check the oil level. I can't trust the car on a long run now.

Yep, there is a fix. It's called the phasing out of the 1.4 twincharged engine and replacement with a whole new engine.

Mate, Believe it when you see it and it works, they have had nigh on 9 years to fix the oil consumption issues with this motor, do you really, really in your heart of hearts believe that they are telling you the truth, or just what you want to hear....?
