I've always throught a well polished underbonnet looks much better than one of those underbonnet covers personally, but each to their own I guess.

I see where you're coming from... because only a week before that went on I had just cleaned the underside - and it was SPANKINGLY mint

But no worries, if I feel the need for change it's only a few clips :)

Ok! Some more progress today, thought I'd try out a bit of budget sound deadening for the doors

I'd read on E38 some time about a guy using flashing tape from B&Q doing the job. And sure enough it does, kanny cheap too

I'm sure it's not as effective as Dynamat but just one skin layer of this stuff on both doorcards has already made a difference to road noise inside!

I love door condom

With only one skin on each door of the stuff I've noticed a wee difference to wind/road noise, so with double skinned - which I'll be doing in future it should be even better

Adam, I keep missing you on MSN!

Some more progress

I've been thinking for a while where the hell I could mount my boost and oil pressure gauges. I didn't want them to stand out like a sore thumb and I needed it to look OEM!

So after changing over my dashboard, and finally getting a new glovebox doorlid I had some spare plastic to try out my idea!

Seperated the old glovebox door, so I was left with the outer skin. Used my original dashboard out of the car for something to work from

Started off with a carboard template

Image

Image

Image

Followed by cutting up the glovebox working from the carboard template

Image

We're left with the basic shape!

Image

A bit more fine trimming and we have the final product

The hole at the bottom, that was once the glovebox lock, will soon house a lighting unit with red LED. It'll illuminate the centre console/gear knob - just like the Mk5 Golf GTi does from the ceiling.

What's left to do is secure the bottom end, then get some of those offset angle pods/rings for the gauges so they're pointed up towards the driver and get the pods in!

Will update again when there's more progress!

More on the gauges mount today

Got it all fitted very nicely into my car

Got some temporary "space filler" gauges out of an Audi I had lying about in there for now.

But those are basically exactly how they will look as I will be fitting the "thru dia lighting" VDO boost and oil pressure gauges when I get them - very OEM looking. Also, I'm not sure if I will bother angling them up towards me as I can read them fine

Still to do the light in the gap underneath, but that can be easily done another time

Also, because I need to charge batteries for cameras n that on the move I have moved the cigarette lighter down to the side of the centre console

Might tweak the curve a little more sometime too, but..

Voila!
