I always have this retrofit on my mind. That is, to put light and rain sensors as well as an automatic mirror. I have read several posts about how someone can detach the mirror base from the windshield.
TODAY I tried with the guitar string, but I didn't do much, I broke 3 strings without the cutting progressing much.



Does anyone have any different ideas on how this base could turn out?

Or you can get it from aliexpress. There are few rain sensor cover to choose from. The one above is the one i went for, its not too bad if you dont want to replace your windscreen and dont want the pain of replacing existing bracket. With this approach i dont think you can go with oem auto dim mirror unless you really good at diy. I went with aftermarket auto dimming mirror.

Thank you my friend. I already have the original auto mirror and have done all the wiring. I have the terrostat glue and the special primer for the new bracket. The only thing I don't have so far is the sensor itself.
To be honest, I find the suggestion very helpful.
I have seen this support-cap that you suggest and to tell the truth, I will probably buy it to do the installation like this, without removing the support of the simple mirror. I am very afraid of breaking the windshield and it seems that the effort will be too great. The glue must be removed with sandpaper, and then the glass must be polished. After gluing the new support, etc.
The only downside is that the original automatic mirror will not be able to be installed this way. If I want something like that I have to buy another non-authentic one.

Can you please post a picture from inside the car so I can see how this bracket looks like after installation?

I found 3 types of covers.



Εach has its positives and negatives.
You have chose the one at the 3rd photo. It seems to be the most convient and easy at installation. But it seems to need some kind of extra cover

I dont have my car atm, will post photo later. Big hole is space for your old bracket so you can put you rearview mirror, hole above it i used for feeding cable for the aftermarket auto dim mirror. Other holes is screw hole for the cover. There is another one simliar to this one but you cant remove the sensor easily once the cover on the windscreen.

Ignore the terrible glue job, ive screw up, did it quick then when away for a bit without checking come back and it cure. Will have to redo it at a later date, shouldnt be too bad to remove start from the top since there is no glue there so slice from there downward.

Another problem there is expose glue in the area where the sensor sit, you need those area to cure or cover before putting the sensor on.

Before gluing, use the primer...

...with an applicator, or any small brush, and the appearance from the outside will be exquisite.

Hi, you do get a flat cover for covering the cable and sensor, not sure if you can fix that bottom big cover for it (not idea what part number), there is 3 places in the cover given that you may able to clip something on to it.

the guy in the video made a very interesting "patent".
Although the main thing right now is to find a way to support the rain sensor

I just bought this wire. It is 0.9mm thick and is for removing car windshields.



I hope it works on removing the mirror base.


I also bought a rain sensor mount to see if it would fit the auto dim mirror plastic covers

I hope that you have already solved the problem, but if not I'd like to put my nose on the subject

I have understood that it is important to avoid any force where one would try to rise the base from the window, but it should be rotted in the direction of the windshield surface. So in practise the base should be rotated either clockwise or to opposite direction to ge removed from the windshield. I'm not sure if anyone can get anything out from my poor explanation, but I also tried to illustrate that with the arrows on your original photo. This methodology should minimise the risk of damages to the windshield.

My plan is to try this very same procedure with my Transporter as I'm going to retrofit a RLS and HBA into it.

Hello, thanks for sharing, it's interesting idea but i am afraid not to break the windshield.

I recieced the base for the rain sensor.

It's big, bigger than I thought it was.




For sure it isn't for the plastic trims of the VW anti dazzle mirror

Yesterday i did some tests.

First was the sensor placement (actually, the sensor base placement)








I didn't install it, I just put it on to see how it fits and if it bothers me.
Result: It doesn't bother at all, the driver doesn't even see it, it hides behind the mirror.
If I finally install it, I'll follow Fernando's advice about the primer so it doesn't look bad on the outside.

Second, was the coding. I did the coding to the BCM, the RL sensor appeared and i tried to coded it.



Seems like an easy job (the coding) but any advice would be appreciated.
