A rough average for me is about 50mpg on a 13-15 mile quiet commute. This can go up and down a fair but depending on my mood [emoji23].

A good run will usually see 60+

Sorry forgot to add that, it's the 1.0 95ps manual, just under 10k on the clock too.

That’s not bad economy. Bet now it’s done 10k miles it feels more loosen up from when it was new.

Oh definitely. I find now that it's a bit more tolerant when using a gear which is ever so slightly too high and overall a better average MPG.

When I first got it the consumption was all over the place sometimes I would get 65 to work and others 45 but it seems to have sorted itself out now. I can't comment on whether a service has made any difference because 3 days after i came into contact with a spot if ice and went up a verge [emoji107].

I do know that they don't change the spark plugs or fuel filter on the first service which I wasn't too keen about.

Few years ago I bought a Ford Mondeo with 1000 miles on the clock I found it was really tight mpg was rubbish I was bit disappointed with it into it reached around 12k miles then economy improved and it felt more looser.

I got a Peugeot 308 at the moment and that’s got a 3 cylinder engine and the spark plugs on that are not due to be changed too it’s four years old or done 64k miles, modern plugs are designed too last. If they do is another matter.

Spark plugs seem to last forever now.
It's the coil packs you've to worry about, they seem a big weakness on modern petrols.
Our fleet Scirroco was rejected due to ongoing coil pack problems they just couldn't solve.
Even a service bulletin with modified coil pack part numbers that I found online couldn't fix that lemon of a car.

Hi all. Newbie here planning to get a Polo 1.0TSI SE by the end of the month if all goes to plan.

Interesting that some here aren't getting very impressive economy. I think it is mostly down to the 5-speed box combined with long gearing. The Polo is quite light for its size so shouldn't have issues. I think the 6 speed box should be standard across all turbo models now. Even Ford have done that with the Fiesta EcoBoost.

My dad previously owned a Leon with the 1.2TSI/6 speed box combo and easily got >50MPG genuine on a long run virtually matching my Mii on the same (motorway to be fair) journey. I'm confident ~55MPG would be pretty easy in the Polo.

I'm just hoping the long gearing isn't too bad when I go for a test drive. I currently own a C-Max with the 1.6 engine so I know "leisurely" performance!

^ The Polo is not light for its size. It weighs nearly as much as it's (very slightly) bigger sibling the Golf (comparing same engine/trim between the 2 models) - the Polo GTI+ is only about 40kg less than the basic Golf GTI (non-pp).

That is why the 1.0 5 speed units struggle with their tall gearing.

The Mii/Up!/Citigo is much lighter.

I think it unfair to compare the Polo to the Up!/Mii as that is a much smaller (and older) city car. While car size and weights have increased I still contend manufacturers have generally done good to contain weight considering safety equipment, spec and things like ever bigger wheels/brakes.

It doesn't help that manufacturers all have their own standards of claimed weight that confuses everyone. I read in a thread earlier that the latest 0.9 Turbo Nissan Micra is 150kg lighter than the Polo but in a like for like comparison (empty kerb weight) they are 1072kg for the 1.0TSI Polo and 1071kg for the Micra. The real fatty is the Fiesta as even the 1.1 NA 5 speed model is 1150kg! I assume the 1.0 EcoBoost with the 6 speed box is a good few kg heavier still.

In saying all that you are right if the gearing is stupidly high then it will definitely be sluggish. Any idea what the gear ratios or MPH/1000 revs are for the Polo? I suspect high 20's per 1000 revs.

It's actually very heavy for a its sector.
It's over 200kgs heavier than the Micra.

It'll obviously be different for every gear.
But they are very high right through the range.
First is more like second on any other car (hill starts are a nightmare of revs and slipping clutch).
I often find myself still in second at 30mph, or third at 40mph.
Crusing at M-way speeds is also very low revs for a small petrol.
It's just all wrong for what should be a car aimed more at city driving rather than long-distance cruising.

I agree on the high gear, but I soon adapted and sit in 3rd or 4th at 30 and often 5th at 40.

With regard to MPG, the difference even the slightest hills make to the 1.0 (95) is astonishing.
If I take one route into work, I can get over 40mpg no problem.
If I take another more hilly route to work, it plummets down to low 30s.
I can only assume those owners on here that get 50+mpg from the 1.0 drive very flat routes. :?
