New GTI
Re: New GTI
I'm not hearing any exhaust pops, are they quite quiet? I've came from a M235i and the pops were pretty loud, you just had to lift off in 2nd gear to hear heaps of pops. How do you get the polo to do it??
Re: New GTI
Hi guys, new member here. Found you guys a couple of weeks ago as I had been interested in the GTI. Well I can happily say I pick this up next Thursday. Going to be the longest week of my life![FACE WITH TEARS OF JOY]

Not quiet at all, exhaust sounds lovely. Try putting your windows down to enjoy them.

Re: New GTI
I'm not hearing any pops neither. Nothing like in the Cooper S for instance.
I do hear a nice and throaty burble which sounds pretty good. I always go up and down my 4 story garage with the windows down
Maybe I',ll record a vid

Re: New GTI
Impeccable spec, looks lovely
I guess it's time for the Polo's first wash, haven't gotten round to it since I picked it up and the black really looses it's shine with all the dust.
I think I'll enjoy the first wash, a good way to get acquainted with a new car is to wash it, you'll feel all the lines and little details.

Re: New GTI
Hi I'm a new member, recently ordered the GTI and have enjoyed reading all reviews and this forum for feedback on the car. It appears cars are beginning to arrive a little more often now, how are people finding its performance and handling? The forums seem to be much better for feedback compared to a reviewer consistently comparing it to an ST where the GTI's looks, class and practicality are completely overlooked. I'm interested in the infotainment system as I did not try this out properly on the test drive? Also, is there any more opinion on the sport button as there seems to be mixed reviews on this?
Re: New GTI
I find this car great, I have had heaps of hot hatches in the past and a lot more powerful and focused cars. But for an everyday hot hatch I cannot fault this car. It has enough usable power for the road which was a surprise coming from my previous 330bhp RWD car, I really thought I would miss the power. I thought the car was a bit breathless in power to start, but then realised that the torque seems to be restricted in 1st and 2nd until you turn the traction off you appear to get full torque which, for me, has transformed it and made it more fun (note my car doesn't have the optional sport function).
Handling is typical hot hatch but I suspect the polo is slightly softer than its rivals but again I find it a great comprise for road driving, I have plenty confidence throwing it into bends. Great fun! I have contemplated getting lowering for springs just because the car looks like its sits too high standard, but I don't want the ride much firmer.
The infotainment is really really good. This again was something I thought I'd miss from my previous M235i which had the top spec professional nav system which was fantastic. But the polo has all the features I used on my last car and some work better. I love the display on the speedo and that you can change the info, for example you can have mpg on the speedo and your music on the screen or vice versa!
So overall a great wee car, all you really need for the road, enough performance to go fast but restrained enough that you get to rev the car a bit more to get there. I was fed up with the M235i, a quick blip on the throttle and you were close to silly speeds. I'm maybe just satisfied with the car as I have a motorbike for my speed thrills so its not a big factor now in my cars. I am first on my dealers list for the new Focus RS, I hope I am happy enough with the polo to stop me buying it as I really don't need the RS which will be close to double the price.

Re: New GTI
Thanks all. Picked mine up on Friday (took hours with all the paperwork and waiting for money to clear). They'd left the wrapping on for me and after I had a look at their valeting bay was happy for them to wash it and they did a good job. Initially they were going to make me up some metal numberplates and they wisely offered not to drill the bumpers. In the end I got standard acrylic plates that they stuck on a bit wonky, so they will be coming off when I get some embossed metal plates done.
Instantly put 160 miles on the clock
Mine is a manual and has the Sport Kit. I will say that the suspension in normal mode feels softer than the standard car's, and is more comfortable, but perhaps doesn't handle quite as well. Of course with the Sport button pressed it firms up nicely and body roll is noticeably reduced. I prefer this mode but I've already had passengers that don't! It's still softer and less jiggly than the Fiesta ST, so probably a better everyday road setup. Ideally I would like the steering to be a bit firmer, may look into VCDS for that.
Very happy with the Flash Red. I ordered it sight unseen as could not find a demo car in red. To me it really makes it look like a hot hatch and the contrast with all the black trim and sunroof makes it pop.
There's one thing I'm a little disappointed with after checking the underbody. At the rear under the spare wheel well they have skimped on the underseal and only applied it to the seams, leaving the central unpainted metal unprotected. I checked an older 6R Polo R-Line today and that was the same. However an Audi A1 had a full coverage of underseal. I will be getting that rectified, either at the dealer or doing it myself.

Re: New GTI
Thanks. Mine is coming as a 3dr manual with the sports button option, in white with satnav and winter pack. Interestingly I have read previously that the sports button initiates peak torque earlier in the Rev range? I'm not sure how true this is, but surely an advantage that is being overlooked in reviews?

Thats true. I contacted VW about this and they called me detailing how the sport button affects the torque of the engine. Pretty much as you describe, max torque is available lower in the rev range when you press the sport button.
