"possibly the steel wheel clamped down around it acts as a protective cage in the event of a bad rear shunt".

It remains under a large clamp bracket.
This is what the spindle detaches from.

I'm just pointing out that the extra boot space does exist.
I'm keeping my spare on board anyway but for anybody interested, I just thought I'd share what I found after being curious enough to spend 5 minutes looking at it.

Few questions :

1) when I leave the car in sports mode, after turning then engine on and off the mode is still sport but engine is in normal mode. By this I mean the gear is displayed as D1,D2 etc rather than S1, but the mode selected is ‘Sport’. I have to pull the gear stick back to get it to go into S mode. Why?

2) Is there any negative effects when switching between normal and sport mode while driving ? Any negative effects to doing this frequently? Or can I change whenever I like ?

3) If I have the car in normal mode but pull the gear stick back to put the engine in S mode does that just mean suspension etc is in normal mode And only the engine is in sports mode ?

Thanks for your help.

It always starts in D to prevent going in S without the engine being warmed up.
You van change while driving between D and S.
When you change to S while driving this will only effect the gearbox

Oh okay, makes sense. Thanks for the information.

So when can i switch to S mode after starting the car? Just when the oil gauge hits the middle ?

The car has a number of self preservation parameters, including not giving you access to the car's full capabilities until it has warmed up sufficiently. With that in mind, if you knock it into S and the car lets you, it'll be ok. S mode only alters gear change thresholds, the ECU decides how much power to give you when hot and cold.

When oil temperature is round 90 degrees I would say, to be on the safe side

Anyone else get issues with the Boot? I have to give mine a good slam to close it, what i call a normal close results in the warning message showing ... a bit annoying to slam it all the time

Check out page 20 of the "what did you do with your Polo today" thread.

I had this issue with mine. The strike plate that the tailgate latches onto was set too far back, requiring a slam to close the tailgate. This chipped paint on the inside edge of the tailgate in 2 places. VW only give you 6500 miles/6months to sort under warranty, get it back to the dealership ASAP. The tailgate should almost close under it's own weight from a horizontal position.

If you could post a birds eye view picture of the latch (sticking up from the bottom rim of the boot floor, I could advise if it looks off. It should be quite central in the plastic cutout - mine was to the very back of the cutout and to the left.

I can't quite see from there, it's at a bit of an angle. If you take a pic as you're squarely above the latch and the cutout hole, so you can see the latch and the whole cutout around it, I'd be sure.

From the pic supplied, your latch does seem set back and to the right.

Here's what mine looked like before I adjusted it:-

That doesn't look anything out of the ordinary, mine was set right back in the slot. If you haven't had the car 6 months then go back to the dealers. You could check the bottom edge of the tailgate for chipped paint (small chips). If you have chipped paint, they should sort that too.
