I am still waiting to collect our Gti, it's been in the UK for a week now but for some reason it's not arrived at the dealer yet !
I have just had an email advising me that we can not use the middle seat because there is a fault on all polos with the seat belt mechanism. Has anybody else heard anything yet??

Well after driving the car home and then having a little drive about tonight locally, I have a few more first impressions:-

My wipers are juddering on the upstroke and the downstroke (it has been raining quite lightly) - I appreciate that some people who've had theirs over the past week may not have encountered rain before today - are your wipers juddering too? First sweep after getting in the car was fine, because there was a fair bit of accumulated rain, after that, even setting the wipe interval to quite long, it still judders.

Not sure if the windscreen hasn't been properly decontaminated or if the wipers jst need to bed in, or whether they are crap (had similar issues with most of my Golfs and the wipers have been replaced under warranty after a dealership decontamination).

The tailgate needs one hell of a slam to close. The momentum of the pull close seems lost when you get it half down - it seems quite a bit lighter than the Golf tailgate. Perhaps the buffer pins need pulling in a click? Easy to try with loosening off through the allen bolt accessed by the hole in the middle of the buffer and pushing/pulling in/out a click - making sure the tailgate still seals the boot.

The drive home, I averaged 32mpg, it really struggled to crack 30mpg until the end of the 13 mile commute. Admittedly, I was stuck doing 30mph on most of the journey as I took an alternative route when I saw my junction off the Newcastle Central Motorway and onto the Coast road backing up, so I took the Manors/Byker junction. Given the high gearing (relative to my Golf R), it only seemed economical in 5th/6th, which it rarely hit (at the speeds I was doing with the high gearing). I felt that the R would've done more mpg on the same journey (just). On an 8 mile round trip tonight to get a child car seat, I hit 38mpg for the trip, and I put my foot down twice, probably would've cracked 40mpg with restraint. The acid test will be tomorrow mornings commute on my normal route, 70mph roads for much of the journey and no congestion. The R always seems to do good (relative) mpg around town because the low gearing is suited to 40/50mph cruising - at 80mph on the motorway, the R struggles to do 30mpg as it is doing a relatively high 3100rpm in 6th, The polo seems like it would be doing about 2400rpm in 6th at 80mph.

Instigated a bit of traction control intervention when putting my foot down at 30mph, but so far I would say that despite the tyres not being scrubbed in, and the wet conditions, the Bridgestone Turanzas seem to be better than the Potenzas for spin/tramping.

The interior is a very nice and spacious place to be, shows the pre-facelift Golf (as my R is) to be getting on a bit (not that the Golf interior is not a great place to be, but the tech evolution is definitely going the right way). Most of the switching has some chrome embellishments, with the air vents, pretty much everything but the headlight switch (why couldn't they do that too for completeness?).

Handling is very sharp, and response when putting your foot down seems more urgent than the Golf GTI (smaller turbo quicker to spool up?). Heard R2D2 under the bonnet when parked up, same as the R - cooling pumps post-switch-off keeping the turbo safe until it has cooled down. I could tell the difference between the normal and sport suspension settings, the difference between them isn't night and day though (that might be an 18" wheel observation though.

Pretty pleased so far.

Hmmmmmm, mine judder too, I was unsure if it was the coating I have had done, maybe it isn't but I didn't experience rain before the coating so can't be sure.

alandbess: No coatings yet applied, but I have a G-techniq consignment coming - their fallout remover (equivalent to Iron X), then a wash, then sealant (G-Techniq C2V3), which lasts about 6 months before it starts to drop off in performance (beading). There are longer lasting ones out there, but they're ceramic based and if you leave them on too long, you have to machine polish it all off and start again (and I have never used a machine polisher). I also have a car upholstery protector to spray on the carpets and seats. Probably a weekend job for the sealant applicator.

Someone asked about super unleaded (can't remember who) - the fuel flap does say super unleaded, but also RON95, which is what I expected to be recommended as it is the same for the Golf GTI (Golf CS/CSS/R to use high octane fuel). The sticker says "super unleaded" because in some countries, RON95 is considered "Super", with Ron 89/91 being the standard petrol.

If the car is not set up for RON97/98/99 then it's probably chucking money away on a car that isn't set-up to take the higher RON stuff (combusted under higher compression ratio if the car is set up for it. High octane fuels are no more energy rich than RON95, they are just able to be compressed further without pinking to make a bigger bang/expansion.

I will give the 99 a go a few tanks after the 621mile/1000km step-up just to see if there is a difference you can feel or see in higher mpg - my local Costco is only 5p a litre more for 99 than 95.

What do you mean by this? Earlier intervention of the ACC system or earlier detection of an obstacle by the front parking sensors? ACC sensitivity can be set up in the CAR menu (Early/Normal/Late), or by the button centre of the set on the left side of the steering wheel (has a car symbol on it).

I have not had an email to that effect, nor any advisement by the supplying dealership on the issue. Bet mine isn't fixed!

A quick query , once set , how do I cancel guidance?

Guidance is somewhere in the car menus, press the "CAR" button on the RHS of the radio screen and trawl through the menus.

Did you get a USB to micro USB cable, set of manuals (thought you downloaded them now, but they are there in a wallet in the glovebox, and the DVD case for the Nav, as well as the VW spy box. Perhaps Nav instructions are a booklet within the manuals wallet? I haven't looked.

GTechniq is good stuff. As for the windscreen wipers juddering, use your decontamination kit then get some Angelwax H2Go, this will seal the glad and stop the murdering.

My salesman told me that by chance he was checking the progress of an order for a lady of an UP gti and discovered that it was listed as a five door. The customer had ordered a three door and he had the paperwork to prove it. He rang immediately to ask what had happened and was told it was due to human error in the transfer of the order from paper to electronic.If he had not been looking the car would have arrived off the transporter ready for the video to be done with two extra doors....whoops. Explain that to a customer that has already waited a while and would have to wait even longer for a new one to be built.
He also told me that if he changes the spec of the car after initial ordering it seems to jump the queue and arrive quicker...bizarre.
VW seem to not be in a good state though I love my Polo Gti. At the moment I seem to discover a different thing about the car every day. Today I realised I was not running in Eco mode by playing with a button so switched over. The car now free wheels when you take your foot off the accelerator and the revs drop, but it seems to change up a bit too early, thus the engine sounds to labour a bit. May switch back tomorrow.
