it chowed up a load of memory (my handy Mem Max utility showing i had 3mb spare of 512 -- and recovering me back up to 410), froze, was hard to kill, and now i've reopened it is running really slowly. REALLY slowly. and the downloads thing is as bad as ever

think they'll have these points addressed in v1.1? I dont wanna go back to IE... so maybe it's Opera time!

I ditched FireFox after suffering with it for a couple of weeks. It did my head in!

I've gone back to IE as well now. I was using the beta version of Firefox for a while which was OK although some websites wouldn't work with it.

Upgraded to the full version when it came out & I'm still not too happy with it, it's takes ages to load up & just doesn't seem as stable as IE is. And now that IE has it's popup blocker as well there's no reason to not use it as far as I'm concerned.

but i hate these sites that use the IE loopholes to install stuff (you know the type )

anyhow, i think it's common for these things to keep leaking memory, i think mozilla on linux does it to?

I had to use IE for online banking and other sites anyway so there wasn't much point in keeping switching between them. The only thing I miss is the tabbed browsing.

If you have all the up to date patches and decent firewall the security isn't an issue.

I have to disagree here. I used an early beta of Firefox which indeed sucked. Slow, annoying, etc. I tried the latest build this week and I have to say I was pleasently surprised. It's quicker than my IE, which seems to suffer from processor lag (slow, jerky, nonresponsive at times) and I love FF's tabbed browsing.

Another plus is that it will remember passwords for sites that IE won't.

Two bugs though: (1) UKP opens in the frontpage, even if the bookmark is for the forum, and (2) descriptive text in graphs or pictures is not displayed properly (when you hover over them with the mouse).

So far, I'm sticking to FF.

This annoyed me but I got round this by bookmarking the tigerstyle.co.uk address.

Both IE and Firefox have their plus points but in the end I went back to IE, too many of the regular sites I visited weren't displayed properly. It's a great browser though.

I'm running Firefox at work and home now - love my tabbed browsing, it's soooo much better than having 6-10 IE windows open at times, clogging up the taskbar (I don't like the "group taskbar items" option you see). I've still got IE6 in reserve, as you have all noticed, some sites simply don't work for FF, notably Windows Update, Hotmail (rich-text toolbar goes screwball) and there's that little wierd thing with UK-P opening the frontpage every time rather than the forum index? There is a workaround, my work computer goes straight to the index (the bookmark was imported from my IE settings) but the home one goes to the frontpage and disclaimer (bookmark created in FF).

Firefox rules, but sometimes has it's little "moments". For instance sometimes, you can open a bookmark or new page in a new tab, then go back to another tab, and FF just goes "there is no data at this location" or something. Aargh. Very often if you keep that tab open rather than switching the focus away to another, it'll load up just fine

Best thing about FF? No ActiveX adverts or associated crap, tabbed browsing, popup blocking. Generally faster to run (been a bit slow recently though but picked up again today) and a smaller install than IE! Oh yeah and it's not IE, which is a bonus

Still, like I said, I've kept IE for the little things like Hotmail and stuff. Just as a backup. At the moment, at home, I'm probably using FF about 90% of the time. Stoopid MSN Messenger won't let me open links from IMs in firefox unless I copy/paste for example, so I'm lazy and open IE

Anyway. Sorry for ranting on a bit best way to find out which one suits you best is to try Firefox for a bit and see how you get on. Like GaryUK says, both browsers have their plus and minus points

I can relate Si, I use IE6 as a backup too.

I too love the fact there's no ActiveX 'install or go away' messages anymore.

I'm using firefox 1.0.. never had a memory or stability issue. Sure, IE has it's benefits, but it also has the usual irritating 'microsoft' factor in everything it does.. just somehow prefer the way that firefox works.
I'll agree though, odd little things like bookmarking the frame address rather than the address of the actual page being viewed is a bit of a pain in the posterior.. but I can live with that

the memory issue thing is only applicable to some sites
not enough to bother me

though it is dam hard to shut firefox down once it starts to spaz up


its still the better browser

we're getting nearly 15% firefox hits on our various web trackery type things now


plus it handles css better

from personal experience, FF is s**t. It was slow and un responsive on my computer - 2.5ghz amd athlon, 1024mb DDR ram, 1 meg net connection

i have absolutely no problems with IE.... none... popup blocker and google searchbar block popups and i dontget any install or die messages either!

Well ysee thats why i was annoyed - apart from the (legendarily?) slow downloads manager, i never really had any problem with it - quicker than IE for a lot of things, and you get used to tabbed browsing so quickly that going back to tabless IE is like someone's cut your mousewheel finger off ("what - this borrowed PC's mouse has no wheel?! argh!"). Plus far more stable and resistance to all the BS which makes up 70% of the internet these days.... usually.
Then this memory problem reared it's head (had an unusual number of pages open - but to swallow over 400mb for them?!) ... gah. Pet hate is programs with bad memory management.

That, and various videos/etc wouldn't work, but if I was using IE it would have tried to auto-install WMP v10 anyway - which i'm having none of (why dont those sites just let you download the vid?!)

Feh. I've got the opera installer now anyway, and seeing as i've just put a "new" graphics card in (£25 GeForce MX400 PCI - have I been had? ) may as well baptise it with a new browser.

No F****** way i'm going back to internet explorer - i'm leaving that for the works machines, as it's someone elses problem to deal with all the crap when something installs spyware. Ran spybot and adaware last night after I had the little incident.... took a bit longer than usual (dead process still hogging CPU) but they found nothing. Yay Mozilla!
