How do I remove the piece of plastic opposite the one where the cupholder is located? See photo below. The reason I want to remove this is, I want to install a carkit into my car, and thought this to be the ideal place where no wires would show in the end.

You can probably get to it eventually by taking the radio and cd changer out.

Yeah I wanted to try to open this up to fit another cup holder but only way in I can see is through the radio or if you look under you air con/fan controls there are two screws. I think the two screws will take off that whole panel with your a/c and this might allow access to the cup holder blank! Not sure though, the screws are funny things not - or + more like a sort of * . If you know wot I mean! Its got 6 sides. I tried to unscrew them with a + screwdriver but didnt get far, didnt want to round the dam thing! Hope this is any help.

they are known as torx screw and are prolly T30 or possibly T25 with some of the larger bash fixings (stress bearers) using T35 or T40

So what does that mean in simple man terms? You cant take them off? Or you need a special tool?

you can buy torx tools at most car shops its a kind of security screw plus they can take a loot more force than a normal screw there is also a 12 point version and i sugest that if you plan on working on any cars then you get a set of 6 point and i know that the front suspension is held into the hub by a huge 12 point

A second cup-holder would hit the steering column stalk every time you popped it out.

That being the reason why VW would not fit a second cup-holder in the first place. The centre console has two spaces because it's the same part for RHD and LHD cars, in a bid to cut production costs.

I removed this piece of plastic just using a standard screwdriver, i mean not the + but the - I placed it in the lower part and took it away... it is very simple....
If you need, tomorrow i can take some pictures of what I mean, becouse my english is so bad

Also i've seen some polos without cup holder and with two holes to put things in it's place... Anyone seen any? I hope you understand what i mean!

Well using a screw driver to lever it out could possibly damage either the blank or the dash so I looked into removing this today and its simple!!!

Remove the trim from around the heater controls by just pulling it from the edges with your nails. Now get a flat bladed driver and lever the blank off from the bottom and behind (not from the front where any damage could be seen).

I hope this makes sense, I will take some pictures if you wish.

Mole....do you have nails of steel or somethin', 'cause I hurt myself trying to remove stuff with my nails!

So does it just leave a cubby hole when you take the plate off? Im pretty sure a cupholder would be ok in this postion. It may hit off the steering wheel when its fully out but you always need to put it in a bit so that it can hold your cup! Dunno really guess someone will just need to try it!

either that or you could use the blant to house a display of some kind like outside temp or an led system of air fuel ratio or boost (theres a kit to do the passat dials on boost) i think that if i ever went FI then id do an led boost gauge and fit the led`s in the trailing edge of the binicle (mk5)
