welcome to the forum,
17's go on with out modification depending on the size of tyre and offestt used. Also the width of the wheel is important.
The arch linings would need to be removed and the mud flaps if you have any.
There are some people running 17's on here.
you can lower on 17's but expect some rubbing.

Hiya n welcome
17's will go on without modification im sure, like jon said ask around on the forum a few have 17's
lowering 40mm will be your max imo, so coil-overs are a no-no if you decide on getting them at a later date?
if you are thinking of lowering it quite abit i would personally stick to 15's or maybe 16's as you get no rubbing what-so ever at -60mm + on 195,45,15/16

I have 17s on my car.
Tyres: 205/40/17.

They look awesome!!!! The car is lowered using eibach -45/50mmm springs but i haven't changed the dampers, so the handling isn't great. There used to be a lot of scrubbing, but that was easily sorted out by getting rid of the mudflaps and just messing around under the arches a bit. The car hasn't had its arches rolled professionally and i wouldn't consider what i did, "rolling". Everything was done outside my house and without any difficulty!!!! Full lock reversing is the only problem. because the edge of the tyre rubs slightly with the inside arch. There is no scrubbing when there are two people on the car. But there is when there are 4. Bear in mind the scrubbing only occurs when i am going fast over bumps or uneven roads. Go slowly and there isn't any. No scrubbing when turning either.
If you are going for looks go for the 17s. If you're going for handling and the low look you might want to consider 16s or 15s. Although you could get 195/40/17 tyres which means even more lowering possibilities.
Hope that helps.

go for 15" 195/45/15 or 16" 196/40/16 and slam! mine is as low as my coilovers will let me and i get no scrubbing

go for 195/45/15s as they are cheaper than 195/40/16
if u decide to slam the thing that is.
