I was wondering if anyone, had or has had any form of camera and accident blackspot detection unit?

I have considered purchasing one because:
1.) It reduce the chances of being caught speeding which will send my already high insurance premiums skyrocketing.
2.) The accident blackspot warnings could be invaluable, particularly when driving on roads I haven't used before.

Are these units as good as they claim? They are very expensive, 150 to 500 pounds depending upon the quality and functions, is it worth purchasing?

I have seen detectors from Beltronic, Cyclops, Road Angel, Road Pilot, Snooper, Talex. They all seem much the same in price and what they can do. Anyone got any preference as to which to buy?

I like everyone wants to be able to afford to pay my insurance premiums, keep my licence and avoid accidents to keep my Polo Gti on the road.

Polo Gti's are just such brilliant cars, got myn in October and still love driving it everytime I go out.

Well worth the money if you can afford one, I highly recommend the micro road pilot or the New road angel. In that order if you can afford

I've got the Bel Euro 550 which is just a radar/laser detector (not gps)

I think its pretty good, with a fairly long detection distance. Had it for a couple of years now, its stopped me getting any more points (So far!)

Thanks for the info, thats great, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't wasting my money.

Its now a case of deciding between the plain detection ones for 150-200 quid or a GPS one for 300-400 quid. I don't want to buy one and then have to get a new better one in a years time. I like the idea of the blackspot information warnings on the better models.

Got the 60,000 mile service in a months time so might have to wait until after that or try and find a company who do interest free monthly repayments on one.

You might be better off going for the GPS option...

Radar speed detectors to be banned

As part of the latest Road Safety Bill, the use of radar-based camera detectors and jammers will soon become illegal. According to police, "They prevent speed enforcement cameras from operating and allow drivers to continue to speed past the camera site. Detectors and diffusers undermine the use of all speed enforcement equipment". No surprise really, because thats exactly what they're for...
Although the ban also covers anything that masks or obscures your number plate, this ruling won't apply to the more popular GPS camera detectors. So, if you do have a jammer, just keep it that little bit more hidden than you do already...
