early mk3 golf 1.4 is best bet, you can use the original engine mounts whereas on the later 1.4/1.6 you have to make a new hole in the engine block to accept to mk3 polo engine mount. Thats what I have at the moment with GT injection and Its running about 90bhp* an 95lbft of torque (standard GT is suppsed to be 75bhp and 73lbft of torque). My other mods are ecu chip and exhaust and a couple of intake mods. Next up would be better cam and some headwork and it should be good for 105 bhp (maybe more?)
*90bhp might not sound like alot but it depends where youve been to get your car rr'd. If I had gone to the club G40 rr day and ran it id have got about 100bhp whereas most GT's with a similar spec were getting 90 or there abouts on the day.
cool stuff mate!!

so the engine in yours came straight out of a golf, what year was it mate? could you send me some pics?? or does it look exactly like the 1272 engine? eg the three nuts on the top of the rocker cover that the later polo engines dont have.
cheers mate

It looks identical to a 1272 engine, same rocker cover and everything. They were in the mk3 golf up to about 95 and they were also in seat ibizas of the same age. the engine code is abd. if its any other engine steer clear.
heres a pic of the engine:
