hi having just bought a really cheap polo coupe i am really thinking about buying a gt. What are the benefits of the gt over the 1.3 spi? Apart from rev counter and multi point injection. Also how much do the insurance groups differ and does the gt go through alot more fuel? thanks graeme

GT is more economical with th multi-point injection. More power/torque and better all round. Insurance group is 2 more, 8 I think, and worth the extra. There is also a sports steering wheel, seats and black head lining. The rear axle has a built-in ARB and a rear brake pressure reg, there is a steering damper, too.

Yeah, you covered a good bit there. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head

useful info there...
mpg works out similar with a true gt and spi, because of the different gearboxs, but having said that my gt gives good economy (high 30 even when thrashing) andy's cl mite have been abit higher, but swings and roundabouts
1.3cl is group 6 and gt is group 8
gt you'll get extra trim bits, arches etc, and a red stripe in the bumpers (oooooooooo)

Like Young_Un said, you'll get the ubiquitous red GT styling. You will get really good MPG with the GT, providing it's set up nicely. Even with hashing it, I get between 34 and 40 MPG.
You'll get driver's seat heigh adjustment with the sport seats, side skirts, GT steering wheel and other stuff I'm sure.

That also comes in the genesis models.

I've never had 40mpg out of my car!
I get 32-36mpg most of the time, and the upper end of that is motorway trips.
Chipping it doesn't seem to have made much difference, it's always been that way.

It's high compared to what it has got in the past, used to get between 28 and 32 while it was running rough, with a low point of 22mpg!
I hate my engine, even now it's running like a dream all the s**t it's given me in the past means it's well and truly in my bad books.
I've chucked loads of money in its direction, most of which did naff all, the turning point being Dan (Hardhitter) having a look last year which sorted it out.
At times I wished it would blow up so I could just get an engine transplant and have done with it.
When I sell it, whoever buys it is getting a good, solid, well maintained engine with stacks of new components which will give them no problems... so why am I selling it?
Simple, I begrudge spending money on fancy stuff for an engine that's given me so much grief. Time for a new start.

Good cruising machine: CL with 5-speed 8P box. A bit torquier at lower revs (<2500 or a little higher) than the GT and so better to respond when not being thrashed. And the top gear is pretty high for a 1.3, for relaxed motorwaying. Requires (4th and) a heavy right foot to reliably beat the ton or do 0-60 in a safe distance, though.
Better speed machine: GT... gets better peak torque than the CL (you just have to hang on for it) and holds it tight for a power boost -- when you thrash it. Top gear might be a little buzzy for motorway but depends on preference.
Officially, the economy should be roughly the same, with the GT only a little more thirsty than the CL (or just-about beating a 4-speed CL), but that's assuming it's going to be driven exactly the same

if you get enthusiastic, the MPG is going to drop. Hardly a Dodge Viper in those terms, however!

Granny driving in both CL and GT favours the GT in terms of fuel economy, thrashing the car again favours the GT. b*******s to printed fuel consumption figures - in real terms the GT is much more frugal. I used to have to work hard to get 38mpg with my old AAV CL engine, and Yoof's GT will do that when you're thrashing it everywhere... Multipoint fuel injection gives much more accurate metering of the fuel, and manifests itself in improved economy.
