Sounds a tad extreme to me considering i'm running 185's on 6.5 inch rims!! :?

I'm not sure of the facts - but I know if you stretch them too wide it's bloody dangerous - so perhaps best suited to a show car!!

if you put them on for shows ok, but youd probably get about 200 miles out of those tyres if you ran themon the road, infact i dont even think you could stretch them that far, and any legitimate tyre place would be very reluctant to do it/most wont

Shows ok.. but really, really dangerous on the road. Not only will you be down to a tyre that's dangerously skinny for anything faster than an old granny's pace (trust me, I've only just got rid of my 145's and good riddance..), but you'll be damaging their handling charactoristics as well. Plus you have to worry about them becoming unseated because they're stretched so far, and the sidewalls will probably die after a few hundred miles as tain said.
I'd think really, really carefully before using a tyre so far outside it's limits - it's your only contact with the road, you've got serious safety considerations there.

that sounds just a little bit foolish

i mean, i'd love to see it, but i even doubt you'd find someone who COULD do it. There wouldnt be much sidewall height left even considering how "tall" they are.

7 inches = 178mm = pulling each sidewall outwards by at LEAST 11mm. That's a long way!

are you sure you mean 145s and not 165s?

heres a pic of a 165/45/15 stretched over a 7" rim, it looks mental!

Steve_O your wheels are only 6" wide

Ive got a slight stretch on my 165/55/14s on my GT, theyre on 6" rims but i definately wouldnt want them to be stretched any further than they are now:

165s on anything wider is just crazy imo

Stretched tyres look sh*t.

Is there a good reason for doing it?

Dammit - I put 6 down first, then changed my mind!!

The fact that my 185s are on 6 inch rims rather than 6.5 only strengthens my point tho - 145s onto 7 inch is f'ing crazy - and probably impossible!! :?

@Del, I think the only reason for doing it is looks!! Spose you could also do it to fit wider wheels without scrubbing - but i'm of the opinion that wider tyres means more grip and better handling!!

yeah I did it for scrubbage avoidance over looks, but they look quite good as well which is a bonus of me having to compromise tyre width. But I probably could have got away with 185/50s looking back. I will know for sure when the car gets lowered in a few weeks time. :D

Does a tyres wear life shorten if it's been stretched though?

I can imagine you would have had problems on the back with 185/50, Gareth. Should be ok with some slight arch modification, make sure you get decent shocks.

I think 175/50's would have been fine, but my arches came down on top of 185/60's, and I don't think a lower profile would have made that much difference. I think low-ish profile 175's would be alright though, it was just the sidewall that caught on my 175/70's.

Ive no idea

I chose these wheels very carefully (theyre et45) so with any luck scrubbage will be avoided without messing with the arches.

So what?? - A lower profile tyre causes more scrubbage does it??

Is that cos the sidewalls bulge out more or what?? :?
