"big grille" looks to be the new company 'look' then - not bad

Geneva show isn't far away now - can't wait to see the pics of the new Polo, and then go see it in the metal when it arrives at dealers over here

Has a very BMW look to it

My biggest grievance with VW's and Audi's new designs is that they've become fussy and lost their simplicity and purity.

The 1996 Passat, followed in 2001(?) by the mk.II Audi A4, are the best examples of what I mean: pure, 'industrial'-looking designs, elegant in their simplicity and economy of fussy details.

Now Audi is adding a '30s-Auto Union-style grille (going all the way down) to the A4. VW (which began 'uglyfying' the Passat with the facelift) now proposes a new Passat full of creases and lines and chrome and stuff. Fuss fuss fuss.

I'm glad I bought my Polo before they started messing with the design!

well at least they're keeping the sharp-ish "corner" between the boot and roofline (harking to the mk2 breadvan ) ..... otherwise...... is that front end / most of the body a Stilo, a Corsa, or a Rover Streetwise?

Dont wanna start yet another Tch-State-Of-Modern-Car-Design-Its-Shocking type discussion along the lines of you can't tell one from t'other any more (points at Riley Elf, Woseley Hornet, Morris Clubman 850* ahem) but....... hey......... dude, wheres my cars identity

* if you didnt know, they were all licensed reproductions of the original Austin / BMC / Leyland Mini with very minor tweaks that didnt do much for the individuality - a narrower grille, a slightly larger/more protruding boot etc. Still looks like, well... a mini

Just wait until you see the new Corsa and the new Fiat Punto. That's platform sharing brought to a horrible train wreck of a conclusion (I may even dig out images to prove my point).

If nothing else, at least VW is still standing out there with its own identity. It keeps the common components into the mechanicals and interior. How it should be done if we're accepting it as the reality of mass production, imho.

i thought GM had pulled out of the Fiat collaboration thing now?

GM pulled out of their committment to buy Fiat's automotive divsion (and had to compensate them for doing so). But this car would have been in the pipeline long before that next (which was just a couple of weeks ago, I think).
