Im a little worried about my temp gauge.
When i start the car it starts off low as it should. Then when i have been running on the dual carriageway it should be warming up nothing just goes a little over 70 for a 15 min drive at about 60 at the mo due to the gauge.
Then when i drive around in town with lots of stop starts it goes up. Once i get back out on the dual it drops really quickly any ideas. Before i take it to the vw garage.

sound's ok to me, alot of cold air's coming through the grill during fast driving and this is keeping the engine cool during stop start driving the air passing through the grill is less thus the engine warms up faster

It should be 90 all the time - maybe up a few deg in traffic before the fan cuts it.....
Sounds like your thermostat is opemn all the time to be down as low as 70 - this will over cool the engine and lead to p*** poor fuel consumption
Change it and see if that makes the difference

So are you saying that i should change the thermostat?
If so i will have a look in my trusty haines manual and see how i go about doing that.
Also any ideas if i can pick the part up from halfords?
If not i think i know where else to get one from.

It's one of things I never skimp on anymore and I'd buy from VAG everytime if it was for my polo and GM if it's for any on my other cars.
This stems from buying an aftermarket one years ago for a Pug and it failed after a short period of use - CLOSED - thats not funny cooked the all alloy engine good and proper - failing open is safe and thats what I expect from an OE one
