The Polo engines have an inbuilt "rattle" anyway. This is usually much more noticeable when the engine is cold and lessens when it warms up.
Could also be big end bearings. Does it make the noise under load or on light throttle?

Just to be a bit pessimistic, big end / main bearings would be my first thought. How many miles has it done?

They do? :) Never noticed much rattling except for when badly labouring it (for.. um... testing purposes... yeah... that's right... testing... ahem).

Or do you mean the chiahua "growl"? (damn it sounds loud when i give it a battery-topup idle now!)

take it to a garage and see if you get given that immortal dark-comedy line... "your big ends gone, mate"

Yeah, they don't tend to have an inbuilt knocking noise.. a bit of clunking is common on very high mileage polos when they're cold, you might get a bit of tappet noise if it's been stood for a long time, and the oil pump will sound like it's on its last legs for the first few seconds from cold, but there shouldn't really be a clunking, knocking noise that stays when it's being driven.
