rattling noise

This is something that has eluded me for a while but...
when driving along the theres what sounds like a rattling noise coming from the passenger front wheel area, its especially noticable over rough ground and i can feel it through the steering wheel / colum.
it kinda feels like the wheel is going from | | to \ | to / | | | when driving. so at the moment driving my car is far less pleasurable than normal.
its had new topmounts as i thought that would be the problem but it seems not, took it to charlie browns and the guys who poked and prodded it said "needs a new steering rack mate" but i'm not too sure i believe them just yet.
when i jacked the wheel up and rocked it there was a slight clunk coming from the clamp where the tie rods fix to the steering arm area but its hard to figure out whats actually worn.
I don't like my car to have any squeeks rattles or knocks so this is pissing me off a lot, Mr barningfield has agreed to take a look at it when hes got time (nice bloke) but incase i die before i get to his house i thought i would see if any of you lot have simular problems or any idea what could be the cause of it.
sorry for the post tahrey...i know how you like to be the guy with the long one haha
