Any ideas anyone?

just stick unleaded it it, you'll be fine......
the have aluminium heads with hardened valve seat inserts in them anyway.
I've done over 70,000 miles in my mk2 without any trouble on unleaded.
if you really want unleaded ( as opposed to lead replacement petrol) this site may help

I've always just used unleaded.. my dad said they'd always been run on unleaded, and he was working for VAG in the late 80s so I'm sure he's pretty reliable

Shouldn't cause any problems anyway.

they all run on unleaded. Its only old fords and cars like that that used "soft" valve-seats that need leaded petrol.

All VW's from about 1971 are capable of running on unleaded petrol. Some require an alteration to the ignition timing or super unleaded, but these are generally higher compression engines(16 valve Corrados for example). Polo's should have no problems at all(except for early Formel-E cars which use super)
