BHP estimation

Since my last spec post I have done [well...nearly done] some more engine mods. I was just wondering what kind of bhp figures I will be pushing when the work is complete? any guesses because to have it rolling roaded is gonna set me back around £50!!
And what kind of 0-60s do you think I could achieve in my coupe s?
Mod List;
-Ashley performance 4-2-1 heat rapped manifold.
-Ashley 2'' full system exhaust.
-Twin choke webber carb [off overmind-not fitted yet]
-K and N air filter [bolt on type]
-Blue igniter performance ignition leads.
-Tripple electrode champion spark plugs
-Upgraded ignition system
also, any suggestions what to do next to get more power?

standard bhp is 55 so at a guess 75 ish

I'd say 70ish bhp, 0-60 in 11-11.5 seconds, maybe more if you have a boot full of tune.

I don't like the sound of your spark plugs, or ignition leads. Everything else is ok though. Id have some W6DC plugs coupled with some BERU leads (standard VW ones) The plugs are only a pound each and its what Im using in my GT (until I get some W6DPOs) And I would say around 65bhp. If you want more power, you need a better cam than the standard MH one.

well, I am sure if the ignition leads that I bought were made specifically for my car- they would be correct and improve performance which they have.
Also, I had the vw spark plugs in there, when i replaced them with the tripple electrode sparkplugs the car performed a lot better so all in all I am happy with my electrical upgrades.

whatever works for ya. Bear in mind that G40s use single electrode plugs whereas the 1.0cls and 1.3cls use triple ones. Speaks volumes to me... (Although to be fair triple elctrode platinum plugs would cost a fortune!) Only reason for using triple or quad electrode ones is they last longer. Single electrode plugs offer more space around the spark which in theory allows better ignition of the fuel. Im not saying that your car wont be faster because of your ignition mods, its just not what I or most people would recommend doing. I think that some modifications (like these) claim more than they deliver. and psychology makes up the difference...

That seems to make alot of sense, so you would recomend the plugs in your previous post for my car?
However I thought the theory behind tripple electrode plugs was to have 3 times the chance of spark and that its more efficient - am I right or wrong?

A triple electrode plug will produce just as much spark as a single electrode. An electric current will simply take the shortest path across an air gap. If you have three electrodes, the spark should come from the same electrode every time, as this will be the closest to the core - it won't produce three sparks at once or anything flashy like that, as that's simply not energy efficient. To my way of thinking, a single electrode should actually be better as it would allow more fuel/air mixture to circulate around the electrode before the spark ignites it, having three electrodes sitting there doing nothing will just block this gas flow. I'm sure somewhere there is a technical advantage to it, but I think as Gareth said, the main advantage is simply longetivity - as one electrode starts to burn out, a different electrode will take over the role of producing the spark as it becomes closer to the core relative to the original one.

yeah technically the single electrode plugs are better in a performance engine, that the triple electrode ones because the single electrode plugs are more open than the triple electrode plugs, and the triple electrodes can retain some of the exhaust gasses and which then creates a weaker mixture to ignite next time it fires, but it probably makes no diffrence in real life. I've always used single electrode plugs for this reason.....
... however the platinum tipped plugs have adefinate performance increase, because they have finer electrodes, which means that they need a smaller voltage to create the spark between the electrodes. This may not be as aparent on a normally aspirated engine, but one on a high compression engine or one with forced induction, that man make the differnce between a missfire or not if the ignition system is near its operational limits.
if you want some W6DP0 spark plugs fairly cheap, look on ebay for "ferrari spark plugs" as there is a guy who sells them every now and again for £20 for 8

anything that uses W6 plugs as standard will be fine with W6DPO's. iirc a standard GT uses W6DTC (TDC?) plugs and the coupe s either uses W6DC or W7DC plugs I cant quite remember. Basically the more powerful the engine relative to its size, the lower the number needs to be. Im not sure theres much of an advantage on a coupe s engine using DPO's, the DC ones will be fine and are a pound each (ex vat) from GSF

These plugs were also used on standard Golf GTIs as thats what the guy at GSF thought I was buying them for.

yeah if you look at the early polos, they used single electrodes anyway, so there shouldnt be a problem with them.
platinum plugs are only really of any benefit performancewise on a high performance engine that is driven hard.....
... but they have a longer lifespan, so would still work out cheaper than the standard triple electrode plugs.
