Hello! A few questions about my car.

Hey guys.

I've said a general hello in the Clubhouse but I thought I'd introduce myself in here too.

I've got a 1988 Coupe 1.3 - it's a Boulevard but I'm gonna take the stickers off eventually cause it just looks naff with them on.

I've got a couple of questions really that I need help with in getting my car sorted:

1) The radiator cooling fan doesn't appear to be working at the moment - I've checked the fuse but that's OK - and I think that it's either the thermoswitch thing or the thermostat, but not sure which. I can't find one or the other either!

2) My car is currently missing a reversing light (I have a suspicion that this is a tad on the illegal side) and has what appears to be a LHD cluster on it. There's also a wire in by the fusebox not connected to anything (there's a black one and a yellow connected to the same plastic connector) which I suspect is the right one for the reversing light. Am I looking at the right wire?

How much would I be expected to pay for a rear light cluster from a scrappy? I've found a couple on ebay but I'd prefer to get them cheaper if possible.

Apologies for the long post, but I want to get these sorted before I get pulled over or the car overheats in traffic!

Cheers,

Nick

Hi the cooling fan switch is located on the side of the radiator to check the fan bridge the two wires from the switch the fan should run if it doesn't the fan is at fault.
regarding the reverse light it is not illegal not to have one (it should be on the left ahnd side looking at the rear), the lhd cluster is fine change the buld holder to a UK one it should work then.

The reverse light isn't a legal requirement, however if you wire it up to work with a red filter like on the LHD cluster then it's very much illegal. The red and black plug by the fuse box is something that's puzzled me for a long time - it's certainly not the reverse light wiring though. Most likely thing is that whoever fitted the LHD cluster just unplugged the wires from the reverse light switch on the gearbox. If you look down at the gearbox (at the distributor end of the engine), you'll see a pair of terminals on the front of the gearbox, and, probably, a pair of wires which should connect to those terminals dangling somewhere around there. Just plug them back in and you should be fine ;)

Regarding buying a new cluster, I bought one for a fiver from my scrappy.. I wouldn't expect to pay over £15 even from an expensive scrappy really.

I'll have to check that the fog light on the nearside works as a foglight I think - I looked at the gearbox a couple of weeks ago and there's wires connected to it, they're not just dangling.

Red and black you say? Mine's yellow and black, perhaps it's the right one then. I haven't been able to trace it from the gearbox yet, I always manage to lose it when I switch from being under the car to looking under the bonnet.

Sorry, yellow and black's what I meant. Anyone know what it's actually for?

Ah ok then. No ideas myself - It appears that the reason I have no reverse light is because there's no bulb. I've tried one and it works, but obviously I can't use that due to the red lens.

Gonna get a new one soon then - I found these on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 4541764392

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 4540778047

But I'm not sure if they'll fit my Coupe. There's "ULO-370" on the lens - is this the part number? I'll need it to confirm whether I'm buying the right one or not.

Yeah, the mk2 rear lights are interchangable between the coupe and hatchback, so those'll fit fine.
