lowering not going to plan!

Just tort I would write a report on the days events...........

Aim of the day: to fit coilovers to M@turner's car

Mat arrived at my house at 9am this morning (after getting lost and I had to go and find him) and the days work began, the wheels came off and the front struts came off very easy. It was all going too good.

Problem number 1: VW seem to use really weird sizes, and being an industry bod only equipped myself with tools that i use regularly e.g. 17mm, 19mm, 20mm, 22mm, 24mm etc. What I don't have is a 21mm deep offset spanner and a 7mm Allen key. So it was to be our first trip that day to halfords, which is about, 10min drive away.

So we finally get the tools required after trying several shops and end up calling in a favour (had to use imperial equivalent)

After removing the top mounts (had to re-use because the VW parts man had supplied the wrong bits) we realised that there was a bit of confusion with the springs and there covers (there where 3 different types) buy this point I had decided that I was having a really bad day, with the confusion the wrong springs where on and the wrong caps where put on three times! (My head really wasn't doing well) but finally the fronts where on. :D (2:30 to 3pm)

Lets get going on the backs.

After playing around with one of the shocks things where not going to get better parts where missing (mainly nuts - and avo don't seem to like using standard sizes - bugger :shock: )

We now go out on the hunt for parts, we tried everywhere! (All shut) I even tried halfords for bolts! Rutted round a mates workshop but no luck. (7pm)

Standard shocks go on the back, and I sent mat on his way home! Job to be completed on the campsite, Friday before inters. Joy! (8pm) 11 hours later :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock:

Hey it's not toooooo bad as long as Matt likes the American Hot-Rod look..... :wink: :wink: :wink:

I wasted around 3 hours yesterday trying to fit the front aero wipers and a set of beetle aluminium door pins........ Looks like the door pins are a no-go and i'm having another crack at the aero's tomorrow!!!! so i know how ya feel.

that looks wicked, looks likeits got hydraulics.

looks far more agressive than fully lowered :shock:

Well what a day i had today. Set off from Sheffield at 7.30am and return home at 9.20pm with just front coilovers fitted. :roll: :lol:

Ah well. I'm actually loving the look of the car at the minute. Always been a bit of a hotrod fan. :lol: Could probably do with the back lowering slightly tho.

Anyways. Drive home was suprisingly fun, grippy front end, slightly skitty at the rear. :wink: You've got to love the "Snake Pass" from Sheffield to Manchester.

A massive thanks must go out to Andy. (and a couple of his mates). Cant wait till next friday now to complete the job.

waveydavey.......re your problems with the door pins. Have them on my polo and although they are not a direct fit, there is a way to get them on. Just take off the originals and wrap about 5 layers of electrical tape around the stalks. Now just push on the door pins (with a bit of twisting) and they should pop on no bother. Look good when they-re done so worth trying again......

Cheers for the info matey....... I'll give that a try....... My only concern was that the beetle door pinsa re only about 2/3 the size of the Polo one's...... They just look as though when the doors lock they will dissapear down into the door below the level of the interior trim...... Did you have this problem?

Had no problem with the length of the pins as most of the original pin length is never shown anyway. When they're in place, the beetle pins will sit a bit lower than standard but shouldn't disappear below door level. Anyway, good luck........ :wink:
