Revs

Hey guys,

I do mostly motorway driving in my polo and I recently borrowed a friends pug 307 for a week.

I never realised how high the polo revs compared to other cars, at 70mph mine is about 3200 and at 80 its around 4k.

To me this seems high, is the GTi engine made in a way that means it can handle high revs for longer?

I used to hate motorway driving in my GTi... I used to think the engine would melt!

The vRS on the other hand is great... About 2.5k @ 70ish iirc.

I find it is quite high aswell. My dads 1.6 golf doesn't rev as high as mine at the same speed.

The Lupo Gti has a 6-speed gear box so you won't have that sort of problem on motorway drives.

Yes but the Polo GTi is arguably better looking

Lupo GTi 1-1 Polo GTi :P

*ahem*

Anyway. Mine cruises at 4k revs at 80mph, and yes it does feel a little high compared to say, my parent's Bora, or my sister's 8v 1.6 Bora. A six-speed 'box from teh Lupo would be an interesting mod!

Cheers

don't know if i've free'd it up a bit by giving it some welly over the last year!

I assume the engine can take the high revs?

I mean top speed is about 127, so 80 is nowhere near max engine speed. At 110 (on an autobauhn) the car seems to rev really high, cant imagine going 127 without blowing up!.

Some tech head please explain why the polo is like this

*Tech head on

VW have geared the Gti so the 5th gear is a gear not an overdrive

this results in an engine that is very responsive even at lowish speeds in any gear inc top

80mph at 4K isn't unreasonable - sure it's buzzy on a motorway but if your driving on one of those roads I'd ask the question why when all the fun is to be had on less congested and slightly more twisty roads

You can run an engine on the limiter for hours and hours, all it needs is

- Good cooling capacity - big rad and lots of liquid

- Good airflow through the rad to cool the liquid

- Ample clean fresh oil constantly circulating

If you want to look at the difference in an engine that has been oil changed every 3000 miles v one that has been serviced at recommended 9000 miles - take a look at this post

http://www.tigerstyle.co.uk/poloforum/v ... 05&start=0

GTi has all of the above - you won't blow it up I assure you - VW and all the major manufacturers bench test engines as part of the development process and subject it to all sorts of hardships (temp extremes etc)

How to blow up an engine

- don't change the oil
- run it low on fluids (any of em)
- thrash it from cold
- neglect other servicing

In other words mistreat it and it'll let you down

i've seen 130+ on regular occasions an i'm sure it was dubpolo who said he'd seen over 135!

16v's are always high revvin engines from my experience but these seem to be strong and can easily hold those high end revs!

Ive had 117 outta my 1.4 with jus me in it. I just went out to drop the vid off at blockbusters and mine does 80mph @ about 4,000 in 4th. Do GTi's rev higher then 1.4's or something?

I did 221 "digital" Km/h when i fitted my cams and WITHOUT the custom reprograming that gave me a top 10 HP plus...

Haven't pushed it that far yet, but i can't imagine it will be slower....
