Hey there people....

As most of you know I have a 1.4 SE lovely car BUT I am now wanting to get a 1.9 sport don't know whether I am or because I don't know what to do and if I can afford to, as I've not looked in at proces etec yet.

I have the 1.4 Se 5dr and I'd lie it to look a bit sportier and have decided that i'd like the 1.9 TDI sport.

A few problems though:
1. I am on finance
2. Only got my current TDi in Feb 03
3. I have just started my own insurance so no bonus yet
4. i dont want to go to my local Preston dealer as they will probably think I'm mad for wanting to change now.
5. I need it to be economical as I don about 400 miles a week(to go down soo as I'm moving)
6. I have added a body kit to my current polo(except rear skirt)
7. I have the service agreement(pay by DD) If I get a newish used 1.9 then I can't opt for this again can I?Plus I got 3 years VW assistance for taking this cover out-willl I also loose this?

Do you guys know if I'll have to put down another deposit or can I transfer my finance over to another polo? I would lie the 9N 1.9 TDI in a 3dr no too bother about a kit altough it would be nice but just the more power would be cool.

Have the 1.9ers amoung us tried my 1.4(well the same car) and is there a big diff between the 1.4 and 1.9? Is it worth the hassle?

...and remember the rattles - you'll need to sort 'em out (again)

What are the reasons for wanting the Sport - is it just performance or features?? I personally can't tell the difference btwn a 1.4 and a 1.9 just from looking. Although someone told me the 1.9 has a red DI on the rear badge, and the 1.4 just a red I - does anyone know if this is true?

If it's just features, well the suspension mainly - why not just get that fitted. OK, so you'll pay through the nose for it aftermarket, but it will be cheaper than a new car. And it's heavily recommended.

Also, you say you don't yet have any NCB - how old are you and have you got insurance quotes for the 1.9??

Personally, I'd wait until the GTI/R18 gets announced in September and see if that has any knock-on effect on the rest of the range (you know - minor revisions for the next year, price changes, etc.) Then make a decision.

Have you test driven a 1.9 -- is the performance really that different?

Also, how many miles on your 1.4 - after all aren't VW diesels supposed to get faster and get better fuel economy as they get older?? I thought this was one of their main selling points - the fact that diesels aren't fully run-in until you reach a few 10's of k's

So, if you're looking for more performance and better fuel economy - why not just keep what you have for another few months (well until September anyway ) and see how its figures change as you put more miles on it.

Also, about finance - I would never trust a dealer to "transfer" my finance (i.e. clear etg arrangement and set up a new one). If at all possible, I would clear the finance myself before trading in - just to be sure. Plus, the fact that you're offering a clear title car is a good negotiating point.

DXG: Mate, I owe you a pint!! The reason for me thinking about changing my 1.4 is beacuse I thought the 1.9 had a lot more torque. However after viewing the figures and taking a test drive, I've found that it doesn't make a lot diff-not massively noticable anyway.

I am 22 and this is my 1st car(don't get me worng I love it a lot) but I always wanted a fast car-well faster and nippy a bit more well fun zipping around. My TDI isn't slow especially on the motorway and its very economical, but I wish it was that bit nippier but then again its diesel and I like the low cost of fuel!!!

On the insurance, it wouldn't cost me a much more-hardly anything in fact

As fir features: as mine is the SE it is quite close to the Sport-although the lowering springs maybe be a wise investment for me.

I think I was just having a bit if a blue day yesterday -you know? but you have made me realise(thanks ) that its not worth it.

I will now just wait and get a few more mods and wait for the R18-(goodbye bank balance hello debt!) to come out and then I wont be seen for dust-Thanks DXG and the other who commented on this post!!

I am quite keen on the idea of a diesel as my next car. Mainly for the benefit of economical running costs.
How does the 1.4 tdi compare performance wise with the 1.2 petrol models ?.

AS you are reading this you'll know I have the 1.4 TDI. Well I borrowed a 1.2 petrol new polo and I was quite scared at the sheer lack of power especially when I tried to over take a car on the motorway and with my foot to the floor it didn't go anywhere yikes!

What interested me in the 1.2 is the fact that they are very cheap to buy. I thought somehow they would be underpowered though. Thanks.

hi iv got a 1.4tdi sport and its ok but once you get used to diesels (my first diesel this) you do notice it runs out of steam.

you could go for the chip idea get it up to 100 bhp

I bought my tdi for mpg if i wanted a faster car id'a bought a clio 172 cup and saved a few 1,000's

Its all about what you want it for as today did a trip from doncaster to sheffield on back roads getting 72.1 mpg most of the way put foot down and getting about 67mpg

I dont think the 1.9 is worth it unless your going to chip it to 130 or 150 and then id think twice.

Have to say over the past few days I have driven a 1.4 and a 1.9 and the difference is with out a doubt worth it! The 1.4 is okay, but the 1.9 is really quite amazing especially in 3rd gear. Only one insurance group higher too.

Put it this way, I currently own a 170bhp Focus which IS quick, and I wouldn't change it for a 1.4, but am doing so for a 1.9. I didn't think there would be huge amounts in it, but was enough to make me smile and sign! Even the sound of the turbo is that bit more 'sporty'. I was lucky too, as I got to hammer them about a little.

I guess it's personal choice. It's up to you what you want, after all the economy I am getting at the moment is really poor, so the 1.9 is an all round choice, and leaves the door open for a possible chip/upgrade in the future.
Although I have yet to drive ANY other 1.4 diesel OR petrol that is so good for the size.

I had a 1.4tdi for 2 days and there is a huge difference. I also had a 1.4 16v 75 bhp and is no contest to the 1.4tdi!

My last car was a Golf V5 and I actually feel that the 1.9 Polo is quicker on pick up and just as smooth on the motorway.

icve just been to the stealer and they had a new polo 75 hp tdi (1.4 then) and i noticed that it was on bridgestone sp-02`s so i asked and aparently its a special edition but unfortunatly i didnt have time to ask what was special so there wight be some trick bits like suspension
