Does anyone know how i could transfer files from my PC to my mates, Via the internet. Must be free.

We have tried using MSN which for some reason decides to start off well and then goes REALLY REALLY slow.

And hints, tips or idea's appreciated.

Is Gmail still on invite only? I have 50 of 'em to hand out

MSN messenger transfer rates are godawful slow here too, like you say starts off OK and then peters off. Its faster to e-mail! Gmail and Hotmail will let you send and recieve 10MB attachments!! Gmail won't let you send *.exe files though, so you would have to rename the filename extension from 'exe' to bypass this setting.

If you have any access to a decent bit of webspace, you could use that to host some files and let your mates download them from there...

quick question... are you at home?

If so, are you behind a router?

If that's the case does your router do port fowarding?

.
firewall also affects speed. and so does the wireless connections

We are both at home.
My mate is using a wireless network on a laptop.
I am just using Telewest Broadband. (through the LAN)

I have never experianced slow transfere rates before from MSN except when i am downloading. But at this time both computers were not doing anything.

I tried dropload. But when i tried to upload the file to their server is just stayed at 0% for ever (45minutes)

right OK, if you can setup port fowarding, you might as well go ahead and put a FTP server on your computer.

Idea one: Direct Connect or IRC.
Maybe not super secure, but good enough for most purposes. Find a friendly hub that the two of you can connect to at about the same time, grant 'em an obligation-free "slot" so they can get your file list and queue up the download, then hit the pub and let it roll. However this uses UDP ports, which some firewalls/routers choke on - including my Netgear jobbie, which has totally kaiboshed my DC'ing habit.
(it's motto should be come for the files, stay for the chat and trivia-bots)

I think IRC may work over standard, more easily-assigned TCP ports, but honestly it's been so long I'm no longer sure. Worth investigating though. Unfortunately it's more complicated than DC (which is more or less plug and play - like Ares, but with defined "places" you can tell a mate to connect to)

Idea two:
a. CDRW in the post (and returned with other stuff on or simply blanked). Cheap and reusable, only costs you 42p for a round trip if you go 2nd class, and it's only about 50p a disc if it gets damaged. Sure, it's not "free", but in minimum wage terms it's equivalent to no more than about seven minutes of farting about per transaction - which will be near-guaranteed. If you can set it to burn whilst you're browsing the web, you seal it and address it while on the bog, and drop it in the post on the way to work, you're almost time neutral with the job, and the small cost should be far outweighed by the lack of stress and having to faff about with your router. Or, you could just give it to them if you live close enough to meet them regularly.

b. 512 or 1Gb flash-pen drive in post / passed hand to hand (similar! but more hardwearing.. more pricey if it DOES get busted, but far, far less likely to)

Idea three:
Pool your cash and buy the damn DVD the old fashioned way and watch it all together on the telly (almost certainly bigger than your monitor ... well maybe?) with some doritos and a crate of ale. Much better. (Again only works if you're fairly close).

PS if it's your net provider rather than the programs "capping" you, there's little that can be done. Plus even without "anti-P2P capping", most broadband providers will only let you send at between 64 and 384kbit/s (generally 128-256, or 16-32kbyte/s, about as fast as a floppy drive), which is not all so fast anyway.
However so far as i know telewest is about to get a whole buttload faster .... they're going to go all out and max the transmission speed for their premium customers to the 10mbit limit of the cable modems they use, and even the base customers will now get 512k.... plus the upload speed should increase in kind, which is lonnnng overdue.
