Which is more important to you, performance or economy?

it sounds like you're worried about fuel costs, and you're likely to be doing a lot of miles so i'd say the ibiza tdi.
(I'm tempted by one of those 160bhp cupra tdis!)

i'd go with something economical with enough grunt to please you.
Tdi polo would suit you fine

You like diesels then I assume?

I wouldn't be that worried about petrol consumption on a GTi, IIRC they're pretty frugal for what they are what with the VVT and all. Reasonable performance if you can afford the initial outlay of buying one. So that's what I've selected.

If it were me, I would go for the G40, and guess what that's what I am doing!

However, I can't see you getting on with a G40 if you're bothered about fuel consumption. It's not a car you buy with your head. That, however, would be my second choice on the list.

However, it may be worth you considering a GT or a 16v, both of which are within or close to your price range.

£1700 would get you a really nice GT and pay for a decent selection of first mods to get it spot on. Plus then if you wanted you could drop a G40 engine in there at some point (or sell it on if you didn't fancy going through an engine conversion).

Or, you could put a little extra in and buy a 16v, which has similar performance to the GT, probably slightly better fuel consumption (though I'd imagine they're pretty similar - my modified GT gets 34-36mpg, more on the motorway, and will only drop to 32mpg if I give it a really really hard time) and you'll get a few creature comforts too if that's what you're into.

Those are your most sensible options really, they'll give you decent bang for your buck and don't involve getting a loan.

Just my 2p. :)

lol tahrey

yeah worried about fuel costs

i also have to consider how stable my home is at the moment (my rents are probably splitting up - hard to tell with all that screaming and banging - one of the reasons i dont come home alot nowadays)

the gt or 16v option might be the way to go so i can gather doh for rent to move out

will have to see how the next few weeks pan out i suppose

Before getting my GTi I went through a period of contemplating getting a Toyota Hi-Lux or Land Rover Defender pick up :D
