as a geek, who has recently played too much counterstrike cos my backs meant i cant go out dancing; i've found myself wanting to actually visit de_dust2 and de_aztec (etc.)
(for non counterstrike geeks, these are maps, or levels that are played during the game)

I play CS:S a lot, but still, going there would only get you blown up
:p:P

im a cs fan myself, you can usually find me on uk2 servers dust only
i prefer cs 1.6 to source myself, its the original and best
but i must say can get addictive and frustrating at times

lol someone else that still has original counterstrike...... i think thats possibly the last "proper" PC game i played
(got black n white installed from a guy at uni 2 years ago, and have NEVER loaded it...)
there are still CS servers running? no s**t?
makes me wanna dust off my old Quake (1!) and see if it can find any games on the web

Oh yes, there are plenty of CS servers about, not everyone has gone over to CS:S! I used to be full-on into CS at Uni but now that my PC is up-to-speed for Source, thats what I play, although not even half as often as I used to! Mmmm, ragdoll physics
Anyway, back to topic... why does this geek website's free previews keep crashing my Firefox?

eh, up to speed, what even is that these days?
what can i get for a bag of salt n vinegar crisps and a wagon wheel? um i mean a Duron 1600, 512mb PC2100, a GeForce MX440 (or whatever the castrated version is called

it chokes at my LCD's native 1280x1024) and a brace of respectable but not blazing ATA133 drives?
i.e. will that play whatever Sauce is (?) or should i just stick to CS? (or indeed, just not play videogames when i already have enough on my plate... an occasional visit to the GT series being sufficient)

Hmm.
My old box: Athlon 850, 512MB PC133 SDRAM, Radeon 9600XT 256MB (running at 4x AGP speed), ATA133 hard drive. CounterStrike Source stress-test high of 35.45fps
My new box: AMD64 3200, 1024MB DDR 3200 RAM, Radeon 9600XT 256MB (running at 8x AGP speed as it should), S-ATA hard drive(s). CounterStrike Source stress-test high of 82.12fps
The old machine managed CS:S admirably but it was laggy and often slow, especially on servers with more than about half-a-dozen players

but the new one is the business. Yours might be on a par with my old one I guess, but I recommend sticking to the original CounterStrike until a hardware upgrade
The original CS is still the daddy, I just love it's Source offspring even more!

amazingly all the big matches are still played on 1.6
6 years on and cs is still going strong! nothing will ever take its crown
i find source has too much lag and the hitboxes are rubbish compared to 1.6 for instance you can aim at the side of someones head and still get a headshot!

Should be fine then, if i have any free time on a wet summer evening... 35 frames per second = luxury in my book (hey, movies are only 24, and TV is 50...). That's what Doom 1 was CAPPED at! ... apparently allowing it to free-run on a high end machine (read: 486 DX2) made players chunder because the smoothness induced seasickness at the unfamiliar experience - ie an FPS.
Big up the 850mhz posse by the way

(my dad's got mine now). Highly underrated chip. Clocked it up to the gig a couple times (for benchmarking, or "urgent" video encodes) and it took it in it's stride, though I had to take the side off the case and aim a desk fan into the PC... but, usually had a commendable enough turn of speed in regular form.
Let's split the difference....... 850/35 = 24mhz per frame/sec (and PC133!!! jeez...

), 3200/82 = 39mhz per frame/sec (hm! even with DDR3200).... average of 24 and 39 = 31.5 ...
DDR2100 (aka PC266) with 1600, divided by 31.5mhz per frame/sec = 51 frames per second, topping british TV rate. That'll do, pig

though there are cs1.6 servers out there and plenty of condition zero servers out there - i play source version
(though i have a 1.5 install on my machine for lan partys cos you can copy that accross a network and it work, where as steam needs to be authenticated)
the animation and detail of source make it a winner for me
its like win xp's ghey looks
its the way things are going, may as well get used to it...

*doesnt understand all of les numeros*
hey, considering you have teh knowledge - does anywhere run Grand Theft Auto internet games at all? I mean GTA1..... not Liberty City but bona fide, £4.99-on-platinum GTA.
(was playing it on the train on the way home with me old P75 laptop

givin' it a workout as a "reward" for it's sterling emergency MS Word service over the last couple weeks... and... the thing has a network card... and i have ethernet-based broadband....

I feel like being utterly anachronistic and playing some GTA and Quake over broadband with it)
kind of like almost the complete anti-XP-gheyness.
except for Railroad Tycoon.
(a game made for 4mhz 186 chips... that i run on the duron

)

I have a dodgy version of Steam that comes with a full working version of CS, all you need is an email address for Steam.
Its pretty nifty !
Anyone on Broadband who wants it can steal off me if they want :-p
