Corroded wheel - big problem?

Just been back to where I got new tyre fitted last week, as the old was knackered. The new one wasn't holding pressure so I went back and the guy refits the tyre, and tells me "if it goes down again then it's not the tyre, it's the wheel 'cause it's all corroded anyway".

Is this a bad thing? I'm not going to have it falling apart all over the road am I?

I quite like these wheels too... :(

probably just need to get hold of some cheap steels, transfer the tyres over, and send the alloys for a refurb (or do it yourself?)

shouldnt be falling apart unless they're really far gone (should they???)

it's nothing to worry about it's just the lip that the tyre seals against has become corroded and the tyre is not sealing the fitter should have cleaned it up before fitting the tyre.

i've seen fitters doing bloody awful jobs before - literally (witness to it in an MOT viewing bay thing - thankfully someone elses car having tyres done at same time)

take your business elsewhere maybe ;)

Most definitely. Never going back there I think!

I get the impression that the guy didn't clean it up properly - time will tell I guess.

And on that note - anyone know where I can get some cheap steel wheels for my mk2? I'd need the bolts too as the ones that are on the alloys are too long.

hold on.... nottingham.... hmmmmm................. you could 'ave my old mk4 ones for a small consideration when i dash up to return some overdue books to the college sometime in the very, very near future...

got em free from dave b on here so ethically speaking i can only charge for the new tyres i put on...... wheels are 13 inch, 4.5J width (good for 135 thru 165 tyres), painted silver with large centre dust-caps that make em look quite tidy for steelers. Not in A1 condition themselves but better than your alloys i'll bet. Got two new-ish (under 3k miles) michelin energy 155/70s on, paid £40 or 50 (???) for all in (gawd knows where i put the receipt, it was one of them); one arrowspeed budget job of the same size, and the fourth tyre is knackered (busted side wall).

call it forty - thirty-five quid, and a fiver to cover the "shipping"? :D that's only a tenner a wheel
(or make me an offer and i'll consider, as they're not going anywhere at the moment)

then again, you can probably get servicable, plain black jobs with buggered or no tyres for two quid fifty a throw down your local scrappy and for less hassle :)
