gearbox trouble

Has anyone had trouble with their gearbox, more specifically the bearings?

I think mine are on the way out, as confirmed by a transmission specialist this morning. He also thought the clutch release bearing was going too (but I'd be getting the clutch changed whilst the gearbox is off anyway since its done nearly 70k miles)

I'm waiting for them to call me with a price for worst case scenario (obviously can't tell the full damage till its opened up), but any ideas what this will cost?

I'm not taking it to VW but I'll be surprised if it costs less than £500...

I have a Lupo GTI and the thrust bearing is also on its way out after a blast round the track but it has been ok for nearly a year in its damaged state.

Guess its a 5 speed box? Seems odd to be on its way out so soon. You might need a second opinion but yeah I reckon 500 quid would be about right.

thanks for the reply,

yeah it's 5 speed. what's the symptoms of a worn thrust bearing?

Firstly I was getting a sort of whirring noise when pressing the clutch pedal (only when moving, not stationary),
but now I think I can hear a whining during normal driving too.

I'd rather not drive it right to the point where it self destructs, possibly causing more damage to the 'box, and probably leaving me stranded somewhere.

I've heard these gearboxes aren't the most reliable...
