New GOLF, looks quite nice but I imagine it'll be the size of the Peugeot 307 - really to big for a family hatchback.

Can't see how you'd open the boot unless they've craftily incorporated the handle into the VW badge, now that'd be a mod worth transfering to the Polo. Also the wing mirror indicators are a good feature.

That looks very nice!

Especially after some of the F*cus look-a-like pictures we've seen.

I'd imagine the interior is super smart. I hope you get more driver leg room in them now, you get a lot more room in the mk6 polo than you do in the mk4 golf, it's not right.

Mind you I think the rear end looks a bit naff in Silver. I wish they would paint these bits! Makes it look like the car is going downhill...

But it looks good. Let just hope it isnt *too* much bigger than the mk iv.

James.

That does look nice, but I am still more than happy with MK4 looks.

Bet it will gain some really nice toys and options :)

New Golf looks nice (the silver one has a front grille that reminds me of the 'caractere' Polo grilles).

But if reports are true then this Golf is going to be at least as big as a 307 (Scénic size!).

In looks much better than the mkIV, that's for sure (IMHO). The mkIV to me always looked like a caricature of Golfs past - everything in it was exagerated, in my opinion... THe again it was hugely successful and still outsells the Polo in my country at least.

Any pic of the interior?

Cheers!

This car is a good looking car (but not as good as the mk4 imo), but i don't think it is fit to wear the Golf badge.

Let me explain...

Golf to me (and a lot of other people) means a car that can hold its own against some much higher priced cars - the peoples sports car.

The golfs have always been the ultimate hot hatch, from the MK1 (the first ever GTi), mk2 16v, mk3 VR6 and the current R32. i can't see how a car 'Scenic' sized car call itself a performance hatchback. I understand that VW will probably used the Lupo & Polo to replace the void left by the Golf, but they just don't have the same hertitage or legacy.

just my 2p, i know i'll soon find out how wrong you think i am!

Bit dissappointed by this:

and
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=989078

I thought the "GTI" (for which I was reading: 3 door) was supposed to be a totally different shape, like what Vauxhall are supposed to be doing with the 3 door Astra.

Oh well.

Deek.

Good grief!!!!

It is just me, or is that a re-hash of the Fiat Bravo (the 3dr one before the Stilo - whatever it was called) and the just replaced Punto...

Rear haunches are a straight rip-off of the Bravo/Bravo/whateveritwascalled...

The downwards attitude of the windows lines and bonnet, together with the rear arch and c-pillar treatement remind me far too much of the Punto.

Might just because of the exagerated(sp?) camera angle - I'll reserve final judgement until I've seen it in person, but I was expected so much more from the 3dr version - I thought they'd change the roofline at least.

Nice wheels, though. And the headlamp switch out of the Pheaton. Nice.

Also - no door pins! Any 8 (by my count, anyway) airbags -- if they're not careful they'll get into the "more airbags than speakers" scenario that the new Vectra current sits in...

Deek.

im not best pleased with it either. its goin to be huge! saying that though i didnt like the mk4 when it first came out but now i dream of owning the R32.
u say it looks like the fiat bunch by the rear and i agree, but i think the front end looks like that nissan MPV thing is it the tino (especially in silver)?
the new cars of this generation seem to be all trying there best to look very similar. it seems to be an ongoing thing the last passat model came out and soon after the mondeo came out looking remarkably the same.
some companies try there best to be different and look what they end up with the megane! i dont know whats better!

I totally agree, can manufacturers not think of something original anymore?

Plus, I saw a earlier posting what commented on the size being like an MPV, I agree, it seems that with each new model of the Golf introduces an increase in the size/weight and this reduces the fun/joy of driving as you feel like you are driving a tank rather than a 'hot hatch'.

One of the reasons why I opted for the Polo GTi, still small and light enough for a nimble ride yet although it is only a 1.6l (the old versions of Golf GTi were 1.6l as well, right?) it still packs enough punch...just as fast as a Golf 2.0 GTi I have been told...but twice as fun to drive.

@cyhliu, the polo gti craps on the mk4 2.0 golf gti in a big way. most people were pissed off with VW for claiming it was a gti. they said it was killing the badge. same engine as the mk3 8valve gti (115bhp). which was still only just under 10 secs in a 0-60. yours is about 8.5 right?

your gti would leather both mk3 (8v) and mk4 2.0l gti's. you want to try yours against a standard mk4 1.8t gti (the "i" is red in the gti) or mk3 16valver (both 150bhp), that should be more on your cars level.

sorry robo-tada for slagging off the mk4
