Tappets

are they adjustable???

they tap quite a bit, i know that they are hydraulic, but im a bit new to start tinkering with the internals?!

advice in SIMPLE forms! :P :P

Nope, the hydraulic tappets are self adjusting, only the old mechanical tappets are adjustable. If they're tapping, first thing to try is some flushing oil and a complete oil change, most of the time this will clear up minor problems with tapping on cold starting etc. If they're still bad, you have to remove the tappets (take out the camshaft and then they just lift out) and either replace them or dismantle them, clean them, reassemble and refit them.

its had a recent Oil change!! :?

ill have to look a lil futher into it then.... mite crack open the lump this week... as im off work for a week! :D

Perfect chance to mess around with it then ;) There's a guide floating around somewhere on how to dismantle VW hydraulic tappets, should just be a case of cleaning them in parrafin and then reassembling it and they'll adjust properly again.

A tappy tappet is a happy tappet. It's a VW, a funny noise is an early symptom of a problem, the fault finding occurs when it stops making a funny noise, then you walk back up the road looking for the source of the noise. :)
