hi there
well i'm new here.. i was driving thru bath the otehr day and my car (volvo 340) ate its propshaft.. so i've temporarily dumped the car, and brought myself a car out of a free-ads paper to get me home.. turned out its a mk2 (i think - f or g plate, looks like a mk2
) polo 1l in red. or pink, i should say.
the car was £100, and it came with 5 months tax, so not to bad. it is, however, a shed. i'm not saying all polos are, just this one is. its got major scraping up one side (sideswiped by a bus apparently), and something wrong with the bearing (more on that in a min..)
its got about 2 weeks left on the mot, and i'm going to try and assess if its worth putting thru. some cars often fail, others dont, so common failure points that i can check would be good.. it generally drives ok, no horrid noises except the wheel - the brakes are very odd - there is a LOT of brake travel (nearly to the floor) the first time you use them, but, seeing as the front bearing is gone, i'm wondering if a wayward brake disk is pushing the pads away from the wheel, and b*ggering the auto-pad distance thingy, so then the first time i use the brakes the pedal goes nearly to the floor, then its ok. would this make sence?? i've not played with a polo before, so no idea how this adjusting system works..
the seller said the wheel bearing was on its way out, and it make a scrubbing noise on corners (brake disc contact with the caliper or sommit). well by the time i got her home she was pulling badly one way or the other, with loud knocking noise coming from the front wheel, and not cornering in an even line.. ended up doing 20 for the last stretch.. figured if the wheel came off i could emergency stop.
got her home and jacked her up. there is about an inch of play into/away from the car on the right front wheel
just the wheel bearings gone? i tried to tighten the nut, but its on pretty tight so i guess its not just that coming loose. cant drive the car, obviously..
any known issues with the front bearing on a polo ('88 f if i remember right)? or could it be something else?
the scrapings have also ripped the indicator repeater off the wing, so i'll need a new one of them - any suggestions for a good cheap source for this and the bearing..
ta for any help.. if anyone wants an old polo for spares (based in brighton), let me know
its got some 6x9s and some tax..
