Hiya

Now then, some of you may know that the Polo's going, and it's time for me to start looking for replacements.

I've just been up to my local dealer to enquire about Mk5 1.6 Golfs- these are what i've been looking at as they look to be fairly nicely specced as standard cars go and not too bad on speed.

Got speaking to the salesman and he mentions he's got a 1.9TDi in stock, throws me the keys and tells me to bring it back in an hour.

I was fairly impressed, anyway took it for a 'spirited' drive for an hour and I am totally won over by diesels. I used to not be a great fan but after giving this a good drive I don't know what to say, sooo much torque, and the general power of the thing is great. Had a nice play with a few cars on the way back to the dealer.

The only thing that still bothers me is the sound. I love the sound of a throaty car, and I guess i'd miss this a lot, my Polo is only a 1.4 but with the induction kit it sounds great.

I've just been on the K&N website and I notice they do a kit for the 1.9TDi, but wondering if this helps cover up the noise of a diesel? Are exhausts available to make the engine sound a little less tractor-ish?

Any opinions very much appreciated, this could very well be my second car.

theyre a great engine by all accounts,ive drove a passat about for a bit ages ago,and while the car was nowt special the engine seemed to have a load of torque and plenty of power on tap.same as you though mate..bit unsure on the sound.

i drove around in a 1.9 tdi bora 6 speed

jesus that thing could fly, the modern day diesels are exactly the same as petrol engines in performance, but as everyone brought diesels in the 90's to lower their fuel bills, the lovely government put the gallon of diesel like 3p more than petrol heh

Yeh diesels are great bar the mk4 polo one, jeeze its slow, my mates 1.4 ibiza just beats it argh. Modern diesel are nice, get a s/s exhaust remove the car and enjoy the turbo wistle

joking apart there is nout wrong with diesels these days and im sure you wont let abit of noise put you off the car.

He might mean cat

that would be correct, but i suppose if you removed the car, it would be rather fast.

Another thing to rememeber is that if its got a turbo, then you can tune it alot

Well maybe a bit biased

To be honest, until i drove my polo i would never have brought a diesel. But i fell in love with it after 10 mins of driving. The sound doesn't bother me as mine sounds quite meaty when driving along. Only time it sounds like a diesel to me is at a stand still but still doesn't bother me.

Plenty of torque and awesome fuel economy!

turbodiesel engine, de-catted (do they even HAVE catalysers, though? i thought they got too choked with particulates), straight thru exhaust and big k&n intake

mounted on small, lightweight tubular subframe
simple epicyclic/friction clutch transmission, solid rear axle with integral disc brake
single bucket seat and big bowling-alley type all-round buffer bumpers
direct steering
1 gallon fuel tank
6-inch wheels on slick solid rubber tyres.....

anyone for a 1.9 litre Polo-based dervkart?
the torque would probably snap your neck...

I have recently bought a 1.9Tdi polo and it just keeps growing on me more and more, I used to take the mick out of diesels loads never thought i would catch myself buying one but after test driving my polo i just loved the torque and how quickly it picks up whilst over taking. Cant wait to sort the remap out.

Im with Dino, diesels are great!

My 1.9tdi sounds pretty good now ive changed air intake pipe and filter, its nice to her the turbo as well!

Sweet- what's the sound like? Does it make the tone a bit more raw?
