No it sounds fairly normal for the Polo to be honest! There is quite a bit of movement in the 'stick if you move it from side to side whilst engaged in gear, it just seems to be a trait of the car.

As long as the 'box changes gear smoothly and without drama, you should be fine. It can be quite notchy on a cold winter's morning but other than that OK.

thanks for your help mate, the gear change is smooth,
the change from 1st to 2nd gear at around 5/6k revs is orgasmic lol

Beware, too much free play of the stick means the reverse gear
may not fully engaged. I've replaced the the bush of the linkage,
now the free play is a lot lesser, and not more crunch in reverse.

It was not your fault, it is the common issue for our GTI,
some not even getting the first gear.

replace bush first, if problem still,it might need some aligment
for the linkage.

It's located under the firewall, you may test the rod that connected to the
metal cup as shown, see if it has free play.

The part #6N0 -711-135 for the poly bush
#6N0-711-167-A for the dust boot if you need one.
They should cost within 12 pounds.

(don't forget to fill up the cup with synthetic grease)

Cheers
