well let me start! i was driving down from preston on the m6 when i saw a 02 plate lupo gti with its xenon lights on in the fast lane, by the time it past me i decided to have a race and keep up with it, i always wanted to know how fast a lupo gti is.
i was follwing the lupo behind at 80mph when it just shot off  the lupo was f**king gone, it took me 5 mins to catch up with it! i race the lupo for about 55 miles 1 second diffrence apart and i got a straight road and took my car off the clock( first time 140 :D ) and beat the lupo about a second! at the end of the day the lupo is a f**cking quick car! :) has anyone took there car off the clock!

Yeah mines done the clock... I raced a 04 Lupo GTi, he only edged away slightly but i caught up at high speed.

Get caught at ~130mph and kiss your license goodbye, esp if they catch you racing.

I dont know wtf is wrong with my GTi, I was overtaken and beaten by a pug 307 HDI on the motorway.

I find if i set off from the lights I cant set off normally and put my foot down as it takes ages to respond, I really have to rev it to get it to move. The car runs ok, no missfiring or anything, just feels slugish.

BTW the figures state the Lupo is slightly faster at 0-60, mainly cause its so light (aluminum wings etc)

yeah i had the same problem when i bought my gti, it use go really slow :? . it use to take ages to build up speed, i took it to my friend at vw' he software updated the ECU and a full service. now its rapid as a polo should be! :)

he said that many early car suffer from this problem! :(

I find that with the polo you really have to be doing 4000rpm to get it to move...
although the chip did increase the throttle response and pull from low revs.

Polo doesn't weigh 1200kg. It weigh about 1082kg.

Lupo weighs about 1015kg

Golf mk4 is about 1235kg

Im sorry I got my figures mixed up!
I was remembering a google search I did while I was complaining about the lack of Power in the new Polo GTI.
My apologies.

MK4 Golf 1.8T (150) 1203kg
MK7 Polo 1.4 16v (100) 1214kg

So why is it so slow?
Ive never been able to get my head around why the mk4 16v can get up the track faster than the Lupo and Polo GTI.

Is it the gearing?

Edit.

Unladen Weight 1084kg.
Gross weight 1490kg.

I dont think its the fact that the 16v polo is faster, i think that most of the gti drivers that have raced people like jez cannot drive well.. My 2 mates both have 1999 16v polo's and my gti beats both.

the loop GTI had 6 gears didnt it? so thats y it accelerated faster than the polo did? (ie shorter ratios for the loop)

That's what I was thinking, because they have the same engine.

Earlier Lupo GTi's used a 5-speed box. Then VW saw sense and fitted the 6-speeder.

Some do have 6 gears yes, but the ratios are that close between the two gearboxs that it made no real diffrence.
I have the full details somewhere I'll find and post them when I get home.
TBH the only real diffrence between the two was being able to say "I've got a 6 speed.."

When im doing 70mph in 5th the car is still gagging to go faster, its too low geared. It feels like 4th in my old car.. or even 3rd...

Thats why im thinking they added a 6th gear, so when your on a motorway you can just wip it into 6th and chill....
