Put plainly, if you don't tell them and you have an accident then you're not insured and will get nothing, basically because having something on the car they don't know about voids the insurance because in effect it isn't the car they insured if you follow me. As for cost it varies, best thing to do is phone them and ask.

www.confused.com - let them get the details for you.

I declare anything that can't be removed in the event of an accident.

I dont delcare wheels, bodykits or add-ons cause in most cases the scrapyard/garage will have these away anyway (or they have in my experience)

Always declare performance mods, as this is what they'll be looking for in the event of a crash.

Well it's best to delcare everything really, I think it would look a bit strange if you spank someone in your car and then sit in the middle of the road jacking your car up, taking the wheels off then not having any to put back on it! Always declare any mods, insurance companies I'm sure will look for anything stopping them from paying out as it is.

i dont tell them anything.... I thought my quote was a joke as it is.... add a few mods and it no longer becomes a joke but a morgage
(u could regret not telling them tho.... if something goes missing you cant do nothin) Risk you either take or dont

I phone my insurance up and asked them about alloys and the woman said forget about it... :?

Has anyone here read the post a while back about the guy with a renault clio who wrote it off, and the insurance company took one look at his aftermarket seats and said "no chance"

he has a bent renault clio, worth about 2k and he paid about 10k....

work it out! it's all risk, but if you don't declare things that are obvious (wheels for one) then you really are taking a HUGE risk

personally, I didn't declare my lowering springs when I was with the expensive to mod companies (tesco, direct line etc), but I always declared the wheels and exhaust.

now, with mod-specific companies (greenlight, adrian flux) I declare EVERYTHING - wheels, induction, lights, spoiler, the lot - and the cosmetic mods weren't any extra, the wheels / exhaust / induction kit were about another 20% or something like that.

you'd be sick if you wrote your car off and got no money for it.

Lets face it mate, the insurance companies are a set of money grabbing b*****ds who like nothing better than to take your money off you then try to get out of paying a claim any way they can. Don't give them an excuse.

A lot of the time, as long as a mod isn't seriously out of the way, they won't put much on for it. I didn't get charged anything for the towbar on my escort, or the wider wheels on my Polo.

My first car was fully modified, it got broken into, they came picked it up, fixed it all and even put all my after market ice back in... they didnt even know it had alloy wheels...

I was with Nationwide at the time but my mate crashed when he was with Tesco, he had new suspension and alloy wheels and they gave him full payout..

The insurance companies rarly inspect the cars.

told them about my mods so far ... well except the chip ;)

but its all been weak ass rubbish so they've paid no attention.

lowered suspension and anything that affects the power significantly are the ones to watch.
as are alarm systems as they'll bring the premium down :D

i declare everything. i would never want to run the risk of them laughing at you when you try to get paid. they even told me to take pictures of my ICE in my boot (as that is better than recipts cos they can see it in your car) now i have flogged most of it on, but i still have the old pictures

mind you some of the call centres are funny!!

"hi, just to let you know i have lowered my polo 40mm"
"ok, now is that more than 5cm?"
"no, its 40mm"
"yes i know you said 40mm, but is that more than 5cm?"
"can i speak to someone else please?"

how thick can you get!
