Vague steering

I noticed today that my steering is feeling very vague at the moment.. was wandering a bit on the motorway, feels a bit unnerving. Is there a common part that goes on mk2's that causes the steering to suffer? I know I need new TCA bushes, but that's all I can think of. It's had new front shocks, the rears need replacing badly but I don't think that'd affect the steering like this.

might need new ball joints on the steering arms? I dunno if these ever go wrong though?

£23.50 a piece
Any way to check if they're broken before I start shelling out that kind of money on something that may or may not be alright anyway?
I'll definately get a pair of TCAs though, I had a look at them yesterday while I was changing the gearbox and they're absolutely knackered..
