I agree.

Handling is more important than *just* looks. Dampers affect handling, spring affect drop.

If you can stretch it, get some coilovers...

Me being stooopid, what are coilovers? I hear them mentioned a lot, are they expensive? and do you have to use them with a new set of dampers and springs?

coilovers are dampers and springs rolled into one depending on which make you go for depends on how expernsive they are, they allow you to fine tune the ride height of your car and slam it and raise it and if they are ride adjustable you can adjust how soft and hard you want the car to ride, mine are height adjustable only which means i can only raise and lower the car cannot adjust the ride( wish i had gone for the ride adjustables as well ) ride is good better with bigger alloys allows you to put bigger wheels on and won't scrub on the inside of the alloy.

ok on your stock suspension you have the spring under compression(from the cars weight) between 2 fixed plat forms
if you buy a set of matched springs and dampers then the platforms are still fixed but the spring is shorter and the platform positions may be different the damper is also matched to the rebound (and the bound) of the new spring so that the handleing potential increces
the downside of this is although you will have much im proved handling at a reasonable cost the height is fixed and on most kits to is the firmness, some dampers like koni are adjustable in hardness

theese are kw matched springs and dampers

coilovers are a completly different beastie. the first thing you notice is that the spring diameter is much smaller and then you notice that the shock body is threaded. this is sio that you can adjust the height of the lower spring platform, so that even though the spring length remains constant the heaight of the vehicle can be changed. coilovers can be bought in sev erl levals of adjustability (illuse kw as examples)
V1- height adjustable but fixed damping
V2- height adjustable and hardness adjustable
V3- height adjustble but the hardness adusments are 2 seperate adjustments, you have one control for the bound and anoter for the reboung so you can control how fast the suspension will compress when you hit a bump and then seperatly adjust how fast it will retun to normal after the compression is complete
the downside of coilovers is the price as an example i fitted KW V2`s to my mk5 1.4 and it was about £800 supplied but the ride qulity is incredible (comfy but when you want to give it some big licks it firms up a treat) plus when its show time you can go into slammed mode but in winter you can raise it back up

here are some kw coil overs where you can see from the top of each, helper spring to stop the main spring from dis lodging when the suspension decompresses, the maion spring, the adjustable platform, the thread

I have H&R Springs (-35mm IIRC) and the car feels great with them on.

Coilovers are the way to go if you want a big drop and great handling, but they come at a cost... Over £850 fitted, whereas my springs cost £220 fitted...

The dampers (shock absorbers) on the GTi are uprated and gas filled anyway, so if they're ok (ie, your car is fairly new) they should be fine with just springs.

I would recommend H&R over Eibach (I have had some Eibachs before) as they feel more comfortable.

I bought mine from JBS Auto Designs, but if you're wanting to fit them yourself I'd try somewhere like Venom Motorsport... I think the springs were about £110 - £120 including VAT

If you're fitting them yourself, remember to get your tracking and camber adjusted after fitting them, or else:

1, your car will be all over the place
2, your brakes will be very poor
3, your tyres won't last 5 minutes!

I have Eibach springs with original dampers and it's a good product, but now I change to H&R Cup Kit 60/40 and car looks well - at last.

Polo it stands high and if somebody want to looks very nice - only coilovers (KW , H&R).
