Hey guys,

Decided to change my Gtis oil as its been 6k since the last one. I have fecked up and overfilled the engine by about 0.5 litres of oil. Normally Id just drain it off but it took me that feckin long to take off the bottom engine protector (no axle stands or ramps just a jack) that I really can't be arsed.

Question is, will it damage the engine? should I drain it?

[edit] Another thing, when I took out the air filter there was a bit of oil soaked into it and a thin slime of oil around the air intake to the throttle body, is this something that needs looking at?

Drain the excessive oil immediately, as it could result a damage
catalyst.

our GTI can only hold up to 3.2L of engine oil with new oil filter.

Its very easy to overfill, I didn't realise it held so little oil. The oil takes more time than normal to settle.

Also a little tip for anyone thinking about doing a DIY service on your Polo GTi (or any 6n2 with A/C): prepare to be annoyed. The splash plate is hard to get off if all you have is a trolley jack, you need the car high to lever it down. The Oil filter is tricky to get to, esp if you have A/C, I couldn't change the filter unfortunately, the end of the filter has a large hexagonal shape which if you had a large enough spanner (or special tool) would be easier to remove, but you still have to mess around taking out the switching to the A/C.

I'd buy a couple of axle stands if I were you, they are pretty cheap and will be quite useful if your jack fails!

I bought a large socket for getting the filter off, and I think there's only one electrical plug you need to disconnect.
Those undertrays are a bit fragile around the holes, but you can repair it with a bit of fibreglass.

I've slighty overfilled the oil before, and it hasnt caused me any problems - the oil level didnt drop so i knew it wasnt being burnt off anywhere...

^ m8, you should not overfill it, as mentioned, you can damage your catalyst. best to take out a bit, so it falls in the lower hashed area of the dipstick
