Ok found the following GTi advertised:

3 Doors, Manual, Hatchback, Petrol, 2000 W Reg , Metallic Silver. Full Climate Control, ABS, Adjustable seats, Adjustable steering column/wheel, Alloy wheels, Central locking, Driver airbag, Electric mirrors, Electric windows, Foglights, Head restraints, Folding rear seats, Headlight washers, Immobiliser, Passenger airbag, Power assisted steering, Rear headrests, Traction control.

Phoned up and has 65,000 miles, FSH, 12 months MOT and 6 months warranty. £5295

Does this sound like a good deal? Obviously i've got to see and drive it etc first. I've seen cars for lower money and with lower mileage but they're all too far away and this ones close!

sounds expensive to me! I have all that you listed above (identical- silver, 2000 W plate) plus:

full leather
lower milage (bought at 54ish K on clock IIRC)
clifford alarm and imobiliser
Full VW Service history

plus a couple of aftermarket mods as well (subtle tasteful)

and i paid £4400.

if you want a good example you gotta be prepared to go a distance for it.

EDIT: just realised- if thats a dealer price and not a private sale with the warrenty then its not bad- if its private i say its over the top

Is a dealer price which comes with 6 months warrenty. I know i could get one cheaper and with lower mileage but i would prefer one from a dealer and closer to home.

May go and see it/drive it and see what sort of deal i could get.

Ok so went to see the car last night and am going back tonight to test drive it with my mechanical friend who can give it the once over. Car looks mint to me, bodywork and paintwork great, alloys in good condition, climate control works fine, engine tidy and seems to tick over ok and generally has been looked after. Found out its got FVWSH, has been HPi checked and the pedal box has been done too. I'd prefer something with lower mileage but its still only done 13k per year and if everything else is mint then not such a problem.

So if the test drive goes well i think i'll put down a deposit. Is there anything else i should look for??

Chek if the cambelt, tenseniers (sp) and water pump have been replaced, should have been done on 60k or before, and just general checking if the clutch is light or not
if it feels abit heavy chances are its been ragged the cr*p out of it

Ok so saw the car last week and didn't buy it - mainly because the bodywork wasn't as i thought (don't ever go look at a car in the rain!). Basically there were about 4 places on the car where the paint had been scratched and someone had attempted to paint over it with a badly matched touch-up pen. Also where there was a scratch on the bonnet the lacquer had been taken off around it.

Going around the car with a fine tooth comb there was quite a few scratches (not particularly deep ones) and little nicks and dents. The red paint was also peeling off engine cover.

So can anyone tell if this is normal or are there better ones out there?

From looking at mine, apart from the obvious stone chips where basically the car has been used there's no paint/laquer coming off anywhere, and all the colour in the engine is fine. You'll find a decent one, they just take time, took me 4 months!
