Don't panic yet!
I thought that I've been caught a number of times but nothings ever turned up but mind you I didn't jump a solid red, so its just the waiting and wondering if you've been caught that annoy you.
The cctv cameras like the guy above said are nothing to do with traff lights, its only the cameras similar to speed cameras but gray that can catch you I think.... (not 100% sure tho)

Yeah, I thought I'd been had on a red light a while ago (I hasten to point out I don't make a habit of jumping them, I'd recently passed my test, was trying to navigate a very nasty roundabout that I had never been on before and actually didn't know I'd done it until my friend pointed it out to me.. middle of the night thankfully so no traffic about). Traffic lights usually have a little box on the top of them that looks like a camera of some sort, I assumed this was a traffic light camera and that I would have been caught. I think they're actually sensors of some sort to detect if there is traffic waiting at the lights, certainly nothing to do with red light enforcement. Actual red light cameras are relatively few and far between, you usually only find them in the middle of cities or on particularly notorious junctions where people frequently jump the lights. Most of them look like slimline gatso cameras and are usually painted grey instead of luminous yellow, so you can easily tell which is which. There are some new cameras floating about called RedSpeed, which act as red light cameras -and- speed cameras. They're very small and mounted high up to deter vandals.. and make them very difficult to spot. Not many of them about yet though.

Pictures of both here . If it's not either of the ones I described above then it's just plain old CCTV. They sometimes have CCTV at junctions to use as evidence if there is an accident, but they won't actually prosecute you for jumping a light from a CCTV camera.

In short, don't panic ;)

there are some CCTV looking cameras set up near where i live, pointing at a set of traffic lights, and at the bus stop on a very busy road, my mum was dropping my sister off at work and pulled over after the traffic lights on zig-zags (naughty naughty) to let her jump out, couldnt have been on them for more than about 5 seconds.

And a few weeks later, we had an envelope put thru the door by one of my dads traffic cop friends showing us the picture that had been taken from the camera.

Luckily it had been taken outta the system before it had been processed

Well, I accidently turned left on a red on monday (thought the green filter light was on.. ) and reading this has eased my mind a little- I thought I was gonna get points for sure! The one at the traffic light wasn't one of the grey camera things it looked more like the camera positioned on top of ModifiedMadness' pic- is this a cctv camera then?

Hopefully I'll be ok but I'll still be waiting with baited breath for the next few weeks..

Incidently, my driving has been a bit horrendous since the scare- when I see a set of green lights ahead, I'm actually slowing down 'cos I'm scared to death it's gonna turn amber at the last minute and catch me out... it's a right pain in the @rse!!

yeah the things on top are pedestrian crossing IR sensors or something (for the fancy ones that won't trigger if you press the button and run off, or stay on longer if an OAP is doddering over)

Where in Northampton was it?

Red means stop. If you get caught, I'm afraid you deserve the £60 fine and the 3 points.

and if the lights are broken and stuck on red, or badly sited/sequenced (such as the ones by my local 24hr supermarket) such that you're made to wait for several minutes for no reason, with no safety benefit?

(or reduced safety, if you're in a rough area or trying to hurry for something important - meaning you have to go faster after being delayed)

just because people in a position of power do something or make a decision, it doesn't mean they're f***ing right, probably not even 50% of the time.
