Our 1.2 55BHP blew its first coilpack today! Is this a major problem with polos I know it is (was?) with 1.8 Golfs etc.

Pullmans have agreed to change them all to the "improved" version.

I haven't heard of it on anything other than 1.8Ts, V5s and V6s...I seriously hope we don't come across another widespread coilpack failure and a huge coilpack shortage.

This is the first I've heard of any coilpack issues on the Polo.

You're absolutely sure it was a coilpack - what was the failure mechanism (i.e. how did you know that it was sick)?

Gets a little worried...

... maybe a diesel GTI makes sense after all!

Deek.

I know its common on the 1.2's, but it hasn't happened to me yet. Can you tell us the symptoms with your car before you took it in to the dealership.

I'm a bit annoyed because I feel kinda left out :)

Symptoms - Misfire. smell of petrol in exhaust + light on dash (emmissions). VW assist diagnosed coilpack on No 1 cylinder with VAG computer and replaced on the spot.

Dealer has agreed to replace other two shortly.

Good service but still worrying - car is only 9 months old and has only just had first service.

I am experiencing a misfire problem with my 1.2 as well. I'll definately change the coilpacks as that seems to be a common fault.

Any idea how much a coil pack is and whether German Sweedish and French do them??

Cheers

yo, take them to an approved VW dealer! I have a 1.2E (55) and 3 of my 4 coil packs have gone... they repair them for free! They said to me they are aware of this problem, and they have made a new improved version...
They said to me that they will not replace any thats not damaged as it won't be covered in the 'goodwill' My car is 3 years old.. and in the last year, 3 out of the 4 has blown in seperate occasions...

The symptons are the engine light in the dash.... car shakes violently when idle, and also you can't really accelerate and car feels like its about to die on you. The revs dont seem to be responsive and i stalled a good few times trying to go from an up hill start...

Theres one pro though, VW fixed it for free and even did a mini valet to my car.. so im not complainin too much :P hahaha
